It was a careful dance of his fingers to play the brass windpipe,
each digit massive and clumsy. Fenris was fortunate to find one
sized properly for his kind as they were rare, but it didnβt help
his frustration as he struggled. He was not an artistic man, the
only painting he had ever done was painting walls with the blood
of his foes.
When Miorjah had settled into the castle, she asked the Wolf-King
for humble musical instruments. Instead, they came plated in gold
or silver specially acquired for her. It was only appropriate for his
bride to be showered in the highest quality available, she would one
day be Queen and his people should see just how well off she was.
After hearing her play the lyre for the first time, his heart skipped a
beat out of joy before falling into a soothing trance. It was almost as
beautiful as her voice; Combined, they were a formidable challenge to
resist sitting and listening to her all day long. After weeks of hearing
her play, he felt inspired. Long ago, as a child, he had gained a basic
talent with the drum for ceremonial rituals. It was a harsh instrument,
far more appropriate for the warrior-king. And yet, he chose something
more elegant to try as he relaxed on the throne.
As he practiced, Fenris sat on a throne with blades pierced through the
back, heirlooms of past battles he had won and the foes he had slain.
There was one for each prominent warrior, with their names carved in
runic symbols across the metal. Everyone who saw the piece knew well
he was a powerful man, one that did not shy away from exerting force
when he felt like it. Indeed, while Fenris was a smart man, he was also
a fighter first and a politician far after. He ruled with his sword and rarely
asked questions because his mind was often already made. Today however,
he found himself wrestling with a more gentle pursuit.
He grumbled to himself in frustration at the lack of progress. It was
nothing like her music, his graceful and delicate rose. She was made
for such things, he was not. To try to break that mold even for her in
this small way was foolish.
βYou play well,β the gentle, sing-songy melody of Miorjahβs voice hummed
in his ear. She had come unexpectedly, lured by the music in the air echoing
through the castle. The Wolf-King blinked into focus, his mind having wandered.
Fenris glanced up at her while she wrapped her arms around him from behind,
nuzzling affectionately into his fur.
She didnβt have to lie to make him feel better. Why was he even bothering?
Heβd much rather sit and listen to her play.
βNothing compared to you, my little mare.β The old warrior rumbled quietly,
admiring the womanβs starry eyes and dream-like smile. Truly, nothing could
compare.
βWell.. I like hearing you play, Fenris.β She smiled, shifting her head to the
side to watch him. He paused at that. As much as he enjoyed listening to
her, he hadnβt really considered that she herself might want to listen to fine
music. It made sense, and he would slap himself for his stupidity if she wasnβt
present. He would get a skald to sing her songs and play whatever instrument
she wished. He could make that happen in an instant, to fill the air and make
her smile even if he wasnβt the one doing it.
βMaybe we could play together sometime?β She offered, leaning in to kiss the
grizzled wolf gently. A second realization hit the lovestruck wolf, silently cursing
himself once more. No, it was never about the quality.. Bringing a bard to serenade
her wasnβt the same as doing it himself, in fact it only highlighted his weakness.
Fenris was a warrior king, a fighter first, but he could also be a lover. He could
make her happy and court her in her peoplesβ ways in addition to his own.
βI would like that.β He nodded towards her, his eyes shifting from his bride to the
brass flute. How hard could it be? If he could conquer kingdoms he could surely
conquer a metal tube. ββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ
