As a an licensed a&p, im wondering how the cylinder sheared its self. Glad you made a safe landing.

No clue, first thought was maybe it was a re-manufactured jug but it was brand new with the engine in 2006 when the STC was carried out. There's only about a thousand hours SMOH on it

I am a 747 mechanic with a year to my name, so i dont have alot of piston experience. I have a suspicion it was a cracked cooling fin. Those jugs are sometimes 2 parts screwed together at manufacture (faulty part?). I would say wrong piston rings, but i would think that would bend the rod before it does THAT.

Agian, glad your safe. Good job, can be a terrifying thing, inflight problems like that.

These are solid castings with a valve cover on the top. It really is odd to see it fail in such a spectacular manner for certain. If you haven't seen it yet I posted a picture of the cylinder too.
