Pulled the cowling off the next day to get some photos. The cylinder split just inboard of the valve space and blew the head into the side of the cowling. The baffling and carburetor piper are all that is holding it in place. The two parts on top are the valve guide rods which have been pulled from the crank case. Maybe I'll link the ATC recording if people want.

Thank you thank you, I need to post something finished and stop leaving everything a work in progress! And it really was a shock, that engine has run like a champ for the 8 years i've had the plane and it wasn't high hours either! And when I say it runs like a champ I mean to the extent other pilots would fly the plane and comment on it. Really was a normal day till suddenly (and litterally) BANG!
That is so strange, I wonder if there was not something more going on. I know those are solid casts, not bolted together like some of the older rigs, and given it ran SO LONG without issue I can't really say it was a flaw. I honestly am completely baffled how it broke like this.
