If it looks like lots of details appear on a character out of nowhere... Well, I have a habit of doing a lot on one layer, even an entire picture :T
I usually use basic Photoshop dry media brushes for sketch/lineart, and like to use various textured brushes for later stages of coloring.
I try to not overuse textured brushes, but not very succesfully. :P

I usually go through the process of tinkering with colour balance/saturation/tones at the very end, and like to duplicate the very final layer of my pictures so that I can add a subtle grain filter to everything. I just think it looks nice when you zoom in very close. But again, I try not to add too much grain so that it looks distracting.
