Rebellious dragons of old lost a civil war against a rival clan, and were cursed into a humiliating form: bipedal, wingless and magic-less dragon humanoids known as the Drayg. However, one draconic trait to persist through the curse's magic is that of a dragon's breath weapon. Drayg are still able to utilize such an attack, and it seems that scale color is a good indication of what elemental affinity a draygas might possess.
Red Scales: Fire breath and fire resistance
Blue Scales: Lightning breath and lightning resistance
Black Scales: Acid breath and acid resistance
Green Scales: Acid breath and acid resistance
White Scales: Cold breath and cold resistance
Brown Scales: Fire breath and fire resistance
It is important to note that scale color, as listed above, denotes what element is particularly ineffective against a draygas of a particular color. I have seen many red-scaled drayg shrug off a particularly devastating fire spell as though it water running across their scales...
