The painful flashback to Galicja continues...
phew, sorry this one took so long. Lots of complex staging and careful flatting, and I'm still not sure it's super legible...but at some point you have to call it done and move on!

What I never really understood is that the Eastern Eurpean jews were poor. Jews in the old Holy Roman EMpire, in France, Spain, England usually had gathered some noticeable wealth, and / or were deptors of authorities. That was the main reason to gt rid of them. When Them are beggars and we are beggards, whats the point?
Hmm, okay. Start with the fact that Russian Orthodoxy was an outgrowth of the Greek Church, and was given the 'killers of Christ' idea that the early Christian Church developed. Further, there was a nation on the north shore of the Black Sea, the Khazars, who adopted Judaism and were the enemies of the Kievan Rus (the first manifestation of the Russian state). Later, Ivan the Terrible was asked to admit Jews into the Russian lands, and he refused saying that the Jews bring strange plants and diseases with them (not to mention the religion), and were more industrious than the Russians.

“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.”
