Today they call it PTSD, but it's had other names in the past: battle fatigue, shell shock... Sudden loud or sharp noises still make me try to retract my head like a turtle. And convincing people that one needn't have been in the military to have it is an uphill battle.
I know what you're talking about. My ex-wife used to get so irritated with me because I would violently flinch whenever I heard a loud noise. I don't know why I do that; I've never had any kind of trauma that should cause me to experience PTSD.
As for never having been in the military to experience it, that may be why it isn't referred to as battle fatigue or shell shock any more.

For me, it was a combination of events, but most of them date back to working security at the nuke plant -- and no, none of them were nuclear related.
My girlfriend, a psychological therapist, has helped me working with it over the years, even before she was certified. The sound of a stun gun or even a set of those rattling magnets (they sound a lot like a stun gun) can still cause neck aches for days.
