Here’s a detailed look at the headstock of my McNally Strumulele. It is a sort of modified slothead, with individual holes instead of a slot. At the far right, you can see that this instrument has a zero fret. The strings are very close to the headstock all the way to their respective holes. The vertical (in this view) strips are a plastic material to keep the strings from digging into the wood as they break over into the holes.
According to the website, the wood here is padouk. It looks like a cool design, but I will reserve the right to revise my opinion after I change the strings for the first time.
