Here we have a collection of sleeping bag mimics and the expected life cycle of the species.
They start as blankets that protect their owner, eventually growing up to become proper sleeping bags, and once they reach a certain age, become a nearly indestructible beast of a bag.
They feed on the energy of dreams, keeping the sleeper safe within with psionic defenses. They can stop intrusive nightmares and dream scrying. They're very soft on the inside.
Wild sleeping bag mimics aren't a "threat", per se. If one ambushes you, the worst you'll have happen is you lose a day of adventuring. But hey, free night of perfect sleep, and you wake up feeling like you spent the night in a 5-star bed XD
Rumor has it the king of the land has an elder pufferbag beneath his castle that safeguards the whole kingdom from dark dreams, a rumor that was only made worse by a mysterious donation of blankets to orphanages across the land...

Mimics being friendly to their owners could actually explain the protectiveness of chest mimics and others that are generally violent towards the usual adventurer party of what would, in more enlightened times, be considered thieves. The "adventurer" coming to steal one of these better look out, or they'll get a good night's sleep before being taken off to the local authorities.
That's actually a good point, mimics are considered "intelligent creatures" so it would be possible that they could actually be guarding their contents instead of using them to lure victims in.
Now I'm just imagining using that as a DM to stop the Chaotic Stupid Rogue from stealing from a quest giver's house XD
"Hey, I see a chest, I want to loot it." "You're aware this is the home of the Lawful Good quest giver your party is working for, right?" "Yes, I got a 22 on my Disable Device roll, what's in the chest?" "Teeth."
