Belated birthday thing for the inimitable
tann!
He'd asked me to draw his love-bunnies Baker (the albino squirrel) and Piedmont (the regular-bino wolverine), and I joked that I was going to draw them as Bran and Hodor from the Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels. Because I think that's hilarious.
They're basically the fantasy version of Master Blaster, from Mad Max. Also hilarious.
The background is heavily modeled from a Dean Cornwell illustration. I don't know the title, and it's not coming up in a google image search, so I can't link to it directly, but you'd know it if you saw it. I recommend everybody google image search for Dean Cornwell anyway, because he was totally awesome. The "Dean of Illustration," they called him. So yeah, thanks, Dean -- I owe you one!
Also, this goes to show that if anyone wants a commission from me, the easiest way to get one is to cook me gourmet meals and clean my house for four years <3
Enjoy 30, dude!

There are supposedly two left to go. And I think he's pretty much sidelined the books to work on the HBO miniseries or whatever.
Honestly, I can understand wanting to take a little break after cranking out 2500 pages in a series. I guess as a professional, he has a certain obligation to his readership to finish the series and offer them closure, but as a creative person, I can totally dig wanting to do something different for a while <3

Haha, that was soooo me, dude.
Both my roommates and a few of my friends read them and it was like some kind of cult.
It wasn't until I literally had to read them for work that I picked it up. Somebody wanted a script written in the style of Martin's prose, so I finally broke down and read them.
And hey, as it turns out, they're a fun read. If and when you crack under the pressure and decide to read them, hopefully you'll enjoy them as well ^_^

That's something I've been trying to work on ^_^
I've been looking at folks like Dean Cornwell or Ashley Wood or Manet, and they all have different styles and different historical contexts, but they all manage to get a ton across without spelling out a whole lot. It's hard to do, but it's something I want to keep working at <3

I saw some Manet prints in my doctor's office recently... I tried to give it a shot. I found that letting colors blend and bleed over and into each other was extremely appealing. I'll have to look at Dean Cornwell and Ashley Wood. See if I can't get more of a grasp on this.
You should also take a look at JC Leyendecker if you haven't already <3
I think the key is really knowing *exactly* where to drop the highlights. You can have a piece that's mostly in shadow, and the mid-tones can be loose and wild, and if you can carve in the highlights just right, the whole thing makes perfect sense.
Which is easier said than done, haha Tons and tons of drawing from observation later, it probably starts to feel more intuitive...
But hey, where's the fun in easy, right?

well kamui, buddy old sport, my brokerage firm here would appreciate a token allocation of 2000 shares of those prime lilguyxderfdude stocks, at one thirteen per share maximum. would hate to have hype of the lil guy stock leaking onto front page on WSJ before any of us short on it, catch my drift?
To be fair, this was me seeing
tann's wolverine and squirrel as Hodor and Bran, rather than me seeing Hodor and Bran as a wolverine and a squirrel (if that makes sense).
If I were picking animals based on the books, I guess Bran would have to be a wolf, and Hodor would be... I don't know, a manatee? Haha. Maybe a Highland cow?
