Actually that'd be pretty handy for nighttime checks! I'm sure there's some kind of chemical that has a luminous reaction when it comes into contact with ammonia....

I'd actually be easier to use the pH of the diaper to trigger the luminous reaction... pee is acidic, after all... and not good to base it on ammonia, as it takes a good while for anything in pee to break down into ammonia... if you're waiting on ammonia, expect rashes or leaks.

LEDs and a wetness detector would be much brighter than a chemiluminescent reaction.

you'd be surprised how bright you can make a chemiluminescent reaction; most are only a few parts per million in like fireflies and such... get the pure stuff and you can get it pretty bright X3

Going a bit too far down the rabbit hole... Fairly sure this will not work (and do not try this at home, etc), but maybe gamma-irradiating SAP powder beforehand might? Possibly having a beneficial effect on absorbency due to all the new tiny holes (this only sounds right, it very likely isn't)
