The Sunset Cathedra is one of the Kaleida landscapes drawn by nobodyspecial0990 This location lies at the edge of a volcanic region in the desert. During Kaleida's prehistory, magma beneath the surface of this place filled with air bubbles during eruptions, many of which never reached the surface. The rock solidified and the bubbles were locked into place.
As the millenia rolled by, rain fell in the area or was channeled there after falling on the slopes of the nearby volcanoes. It sank into the porous volcanic rock, filtered down into the air pockets, and then drained away, leaving behind the minerals it'd leached out of the rock. Those minerals formed crystals, usually purple amethysts.
Time passed. The rain, wind, and sand wore away at the rock, and gradually revealed the air pockets, which by this time had formed tough shells due to the minerals. In other words, they'd formed into geodes. The larger ones stood proud of the rock while many smaller ones came loose completely.
By then, 6-slimbed stone-age folk had settled nearby and discovered this dry, rocky spot. They found the mini-geodes half-buried in the sand, broke them open, and discovered that they were full of sparkling amethysts. Looking to the bigger balls of stone half-protruding from the rock face, they broke those open too, and discovered that they too were geodes.

Soon afterwards the local tribes began using the area as a council arena for their tribal leaders to meet and discuss important matters. Each would take a single giant geode as a throne, and they would talk into the night when the desert heat was gone.
Yet, sitting on a base of amethyst crystals is far from comfortable. That was easy enough to solve: they scooped sand from the basin into the thrones, and have done so since. The sand pours out as the wind catches it, but replacing it is easy.
The place truly comes into its full glory when the tribal chiefs' assistants bring 'bowls' - broken mini-geodes - of water filled with UV algae to light the arena. The blue light ripples and glows, a rich counterpoint to the diamondesque starlight above, and both set the amethysts ablaze!
Possible ret-cons: No ret-cons to the location itself, although I'd love to build up more of the world around this location, especially the culture that leads to the councils occuring here.
