Cabovers used to roam the country as a more common sight. However, in this day and age, they're hard to find. but times seem to be changing. As emissions standards get more strict, older trucks, like this Freightliner FLT, are making a comeback as drivers prefer the more powerful motors over fuel economy that modern trucks have. In fact, many old trucks that were mothballed are being rebuilt to fill the demands of the independent drivers.
Are modern trucks coming onto the scene? Yes. Just last year, Yellow Corp bought 1,200 new Peterbilts for their LTL business. But with the owner-operators preferring the older models, these old horses will continue to transport freight for years to come.

Owner-operators are keeping a lot of old equipment alive. Just like short line railroads with 50+ year old equipment. I work for a regional semi truck and trailer repair firm and owner-operators always bring in the coolest stuff. I think my last big job was on a 1986 trailvan as a matter of fact.
