This has been something in planning ever since I wrote Hearts And Minds! In writing that story I heavily skimmed over the ending, since I wasn't sure how a Rynar protagonist would go over with people! Though now, I've decided to give Shazike a story-board thing similar to how I'm doing Of Mice And Men
Hoping to give Shazike a bit of justice, and show what she had to go through to change from her time as a Battlemaster in the Rynar Collective!
Compared to Of Mice And Men I'm not quite sure how fast or often I'll post parts for this. But gauging on the reception of it, I may go faster if I can!

Shazike sat on a relaxing white chair in a small waiting room. Across from her, a large forest painting had kept her attention for the longest time. She was pretending to see the make-believe trees sway.
She imagined herself walking along the linear cobbled path through the luscious undergrowth. Such a forested world reminded her heavily of home. Though this was home before her 'home' in the Collective. Back when she lived in a small hut with her father. Her thoughts wandered toward him for a moment, yet she found she couldn't remember anything of the man.
Shazike had been taken young for the Battlemaster project, after all. And no doubt, after thirty years, much of her memories of him had faded. While the notion didn't sit right with her, she was more disturbed by how little it affected her. Should she feel sadness for not remembering her brood bearer? Let alone her father, she couldn't recollect anything of her mother.
Her attention returned to reality as she realized how much time was passing. Shaking her head to clear her mind, she glanced up at the clock, and anxiety stirred within her gradually.
Shazike wasn't used to waiting too long for Olnith to be ready for her. However, she had figured he was making a brief report. He had to keep constant tabs with a local UAF officer while working with Shazike. Soon making the Rynar antsy as she looked to her guard at the entrance.
She rarely traded words with the large man they had as her guard, though she never thought he was annoyed with her. At first, it was from respect, though soon, she believed he wasn't much of a talker either way. Her misconceptions and confusion about UTO civilian life were undoubtedly funny to him in a handful of cases. As she had caught him snickering when she stared blankly at the most 'normal' of things for them.
Shazike was never allowed to hold much that could be considered a weapon, but the man kept watch in his bulky power armor. Ever ready and alert in case Shazike lost her temperament.
The large Arkatian grunted, obviously having noticed Olnith's absence. Shazike flashed a smile, and the man reciprocated before glancing at the wall clock. He motioned his hand to the counter, and Shazike took it as permission to stand up. Stretching her legs, she walked over to the counter.
The large Rynar bent down slightly to see the Ra'lai assistant tapping away at her holo-pad. Shazike's sheer size left her dwarfing the small woman, though the Ra'Lai was ever peppy and never seemed afraid of Shazike. The woman glanced up, only to flash a wide smile as she checked the time.
"Oh! Ms. Shazike! Olnith should be ready by now; he just had a call! You can go back, and I'll buzz him you're coming!"
Shazike hissed softly in thanks, smiling while leaning back up. Her guard kept to the door but motioned her onwards without a word. The Arkatian winked her a small smile as she went into the back. Walking through the hall, she gently knocked on Olnith's door.
A few seconds of silence followed before the man opened it with a smile.
"Ah! Shazike! Apologies for being a tad bit late; please come in! I hope you're doing well? I tried adjusting my room for your liking."
Change it he had, as now much of the room felt more open with its white walls. Though as Shazike stepped in, the wall opposite the door shimmered and changed. A recreation of a forest appeared on the wall, not unlike the painting she was looking at earlier.
"I hope this is to your liking? On the last visit, you said that you liked overgrown nature."
To this, Shazike nodded, cracking a strange smile as she looked down.
"It reminds Shazike of home..."
Shazike walked in slowly before running her hand over an oversized couch he had gotten for her. Seeing him trying so hard was strange, but Shazike was grateful for it. Sitting on the couch, she let out a soft gasp as she sunk into it. Olnith stifled a laugh and sat at his desk, pulling out a pad while letting Shazike gather her thoughts.
The Rynar sat silently, resembling more of a statue than something living. Her large hands reflexively gripped her knees as she tried to remember her nightmare. It occured to her only now that her dreams could be meaningless and that Olnith would either lack the ability or care to help.
She had trusted the man wholeheartedly after his stunt with her capture. To be put in a room, albeit with guards, with a Rynar Battlemaster was no easy feat. The man knew she could change, and she had to bring herself to let him help. After all, there were no guards here now, and she took this as proof that he trusted her. Taking a deep breath, she turned her eyes up to the man. His met hers, and instantly his smile faded for a moment.
"Shazike..."
She began to speak but found her voice locked up. Taking a moment, she cupped her face in her hands.
"Shazike is having problems sleeping.."
Olnith's ears perked up to this, but his smile didn't wane. Waiting a few seconds to see if she would continue before speaking cheerfully.
"Well, if you would like, I can try to see if there is any medica-"
He was cut off when Shazike glanced at him through her fingers. Shaking her head fervently before sighing.
"It isn't that Shazike cannot sleep... Shazike sleeps... But the sleep is not restful."
The man nodded but now with a more concerned look. Letting the Rynar take a moment to collect herself again.
"Shazike has nightmares... Of the war...They are getting worse and worse... Shazike cannot tell what is real and not anymore..."
The Rynar kept herself as composed as possible, but Olnith could read between the lines. She had been stagnating ever since she arrived planetside. Eating minimally, barely doing anything to keep her form, and was despondent when Olinth pressed her.
Olnith knew such a break would happen eventually. He still sympathized with the woman, wishing she had spoken up sooner.
"Well, Ms. Shazike... Could you explain these dreams? Do they share anything?"
She nodded, biting her knuckles before hissing softly in response.
"It all is of Shazike finding one's and Jailthar's squadron... But each time, it is different... Sometimes Shazike Is a human, fleeing in terror, spun to a frenzy... But last night..."
Shaking her head, she leaned back into the couch again. Setting her hands on her stomach, tightly curled together. Olnith kept himself quiet, though he noted what Shazike had said and how she acted.
When she spoke again, her voice shrunk to a dull whisper.
"Was Shazike a monster..? Shazike could have done just a little more... And things could have been different..."
Olnith, now knowing where her headspace was, spoke up with a firm shake of his head.
"Shazike, all of what you've told me, you did what you could. It would have been edging that line if there was more to do."
His words seemed to soothe her, if only slightly. Not daring to make eye contact, the Rynar sat quietly for several more minutes. As the minutes passed in silence, a soft 'chime' was eventually heard from the man's clock. Shazike knew this was a chime to signal that her session was over, and she was surprised at how little she had said this time.
Olnith purposefully left extra time before his subsequent sessions, knowing that sometimes Shazike needed more time. The Rynar sat quietly, staring blankly at his desk before she slowly got up.
"Shazike is not sure what to think of it all... But Shazike wants to believe Olnith. Is there anything Olnith can do to give Shazike something to occupy one's mind? Thinking causes more problems than it solves..."
The Viliti stood up, smiling as he walked to the door. It took him a moment before responding.
"If it would come of any help, I may be able to get you a card to let you into the simulation hive down the street. I had been working on trying to get one for simulation therapy for you, but I can expedite it."
Shazike felt a wave of relief wash over her as he spoke. Giving a brief pause, she smiled before nodding.
"Shazike is grateful that Olnith is doing such a thing. Shazike had assumed things such as the simulation hive were off-limits? Unless Shazike was with a guard."
The man paused, chuckling, before he looked at the woman.
"Ms. Shazike, you're welcome to go anywhere! Now, that's not to say you don't have to have a guard. Although I can assure you they are not there to ensure you're simply following rules. I trust you've befriended that Arkatian? Uh... Hmm... I can't seem to recall his name.."
"Sergeant Aicithon? Shazike feels Sergeant Aicithon is distant."
Olnith thought for a moment, tapping his pocket to feel his Yutri.
"Maybe he is intimidated? Have you tried conversation?"
"Shazike cannot say she has tried..."
The man smiled warmly, gesturing out to her reassuringly.
"I know he's quite fond of the sim hive. Maybe you two could befriend over that? I'm sure he could join you when you're inside as long as you're connected."
Shazike flashed a smile as she mulled on the idea. Giving the man a nod for goodbye, she hissed back to reception.
Unsure of how to bring the idea up to her Arkatian guard, she smiled at the man, and he grunted. Adjusting his posture before opening the door for her.
It hadn't occurred to her that the man could be intimidated. He was always gruff towards her. Not unpleasant or rude, though it was clear he understood his duty and the danger Shazike could pose if she so chose.
When they left the office, her eyes turned far off to the distance. The simulation hive was a large building in its own right. However, she wondered how similar it could be to Rynar's simulations.
That thought rubbed her the wrong way, making her look down to the sidewalk.
"Must Shazike compare everything to the Collective..."
