Was talking with a much younger furry, that is to say, a furry, and discovered they didn't know Seminole Sam, the occasionally shady operator fox of Walt Kelly's Pogo. And, of course, Pogo is the most important comic strip to lack any good online presence. I found https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SLwh57rU.....-09-07_100.jpg as an example of what he's like, and what kinds of things he's doing (here, it's selling wigs for dogs). And I liked that and wanted to copy the pose, so, here it is.

He was a great character, yeah. I guess he mostly fits with the villains, but he feels like he's in a different category from even the Deacon or Ol' Mole. (And all of them, of course, are out of place with actual villains like Simple J Malarkey or other political figure imports.)
Commenting on his secondary characters around 1958, Kelly once made a distintion between his "caracatured comedians" and those who were more "true". Those like Simple J. Malarkey, Injun Charlie (a badger), Sarcophagus MacAbre (th'natuural borned vulture), and Mole MacCaroney he characterized as caracatures and "not really true." Simple J. was clearly Senator Joe McCarthy, Injun Joe bore a striking resemblance to Richard Nixon, and Mole was Senator MacCarron. Over time, however, Kelly seemed to have warmed to both Mole and Sacrophagus, and they became funnier and less sinister. Seminole Sam and the Deacon, Kelly characterized as "true" because - as he put it - they represent "real aspects of genuine human personality, primarily my personality."
I grew up in the 50s and 60s and loved the comic, still have many of his books. His depiction of the trial of the Knave of hearts, adapted from Alice in Wonderland with his characters playing the cast, is brilliantly depicted, simultaneously hilarious and disturbing. Thank for the memories!

Yeah, it was always fascinating watching which characters took on a life outside of a single plot line (or rhetorical point) and which ones couldn't manage the trick, somehow. I never quite got Sarcophagus MacAbre as a villain per se, but I have a high tolerance for the 'merry gravedigger' character. (Steve Boreman's lovely comic strip Little Dog Lost had a vulture, eager to see the Little Dog meet a terrible end, but with too strong a conscience to do anything to cause the Little Dog's death.)
Anyway, Pogo has always been a major influence on me and when I don't know what to do for a daily study, a panel of Walt Kelly is always a safe bet. I probably dominate the 'Walt-Kelly' tag here on FurAffinity.
