vombatiformes and I built this this weekend for the rats previously pictured. I't converted from a 5-shelf bookcase, with hidden wire backing (removable by velcro tapestry hides it), and double doors that lock (a lot). Someday we're going to paint or stain the doors, but this weekend of building frenzy has to stop! XDWe also made all the soft toys in there so far. Hopefully there will be more soon! Some of the floors look so empty!
Also, we decided on names for the rats:
Blue -> Baloo
Fawn Dumbo -> Bambi
Siamese -> Bernard
Rat spam will stop now :)

I guess the idea is that the wood isn't really wood, but is that fake wood, and has a plasticy coating on it that kind of resists liquid? Beyond that I don't know. Maybe put down a liner of some sort or varnish or something?
Definitely consider diong this, though. The material costs (book-case + wood + metal mesh + staples + wire cutter + material) were about the same as buying one of those little rat cages they sell at pet stores.
