Years after the Aurora's crash, another ship crash lands on Planet 4546B. The circumstances on the world have changed, however, and a new face is waiting for the survivors...
Hoshi groaned as he came to, head throbbing from when that panel slammed into his forehead. He hadn't expected to be taking an emergency evacuation off the ship... and he hadn't expected the drop down to the planet's surface to knock one of those panels loose and give him that quick, unwanted nap. What woke him up was the sound of loud sirens, wailing around him and alerting him to the smoke filling the pod.
Alarmed, he quickly jammed the button to release his harness, scrambling to the fallen fire extinguisher as he saw the flames around the control panel. It took a good few seconds of continuous spray but after some time, he was able to take a second to breath a sigh of relief. Of course, this immediately came with some coughing due to smoke still filling the air.
Moving to sit back down in the seat, he booted the PDA up, bringing it through the emergency survival mode set-up. Apparently, it counted him just getting hit in the head with a panel hard enough to be knocked out, with little food and water was an 'optimal outcome'.
Sighing in momentary relief, he took a look around, taking stock. Fabricator looked to be alright, thankfully, so he had food and water... provided he could find ways to safely cook any life forms on the planet or find ways to distill and disinfect them.. There seemed to be emergency power on too, running off the solar cells. However, the pod's circuitry was damaged, as was the radio... Until he fixed them, he wasn't going to be rescued by anyone.
Looking to what he could tell from the PDA, it seemed like the planet was habitable, at least. Initial scans from space showed no potential issues with atmosphere or the... water everywhere. That was right, it was a water planet they had gone near when the crash happened. Which meant the chances of finding dry land to make a base on were slim to none. He'd have to make a base somehow, and that was if he could find materials for it...
He shook his head, putting aside the PDA. He couldn't keep thinking like that. He had to check first before he could make any assessments on how screwed he might be. And that meant going out. Moving to the underside hatch, he took a deep breath before letting himself slip into the water.
The sight that greeted him was... well, beautiful. A symphony for the eyes with the colors of the coral and plantlife all around him, illuminated by the morning sun above. Seemed like there was a rocky outcropping reaching up to just below the surface too, with tunnels embedded within. That could be good, he might be able to make a base on... somewhat dry land in that case. And around him was various colorful fish. His worries started to abate upon seeing all of this. Perhaps he had been worrying for nothing. None of the creatures seemed hostile and it was possible they would even be edible!
Of course, he had to start moving, he had no oxygen tank or rebreather, so he only had a little bit of time under the waters. He made his way to the outrcopping, seeing there were some chunks of what seemed to be limestone that were jutting out. After a little bit of hitting it with his hands, the weakened stone crumbled, revealing metal within. And judging by the color and shape, it appeared to be something like titanium. Perfect! He had a place to start from now. There was likely more to look for as well, meaning, if it continued like this, he'd have an abundant supply of basic materials.
Of course, he had to swim up to the surface to breathe, taking a minute to look around and sit on the top of the outcropping. Water stretched all around, the most land he saw being the tips of some coral tunnels. There was also the wrecked ship nearby, getting him to frown. “I'm really alone out here...” he muttered to himself. “I mean... it's possible there's sentient life on this planet but I don't think it's likely... and it's probably not near here either.
Sighing, he soon stored the titanium away in his pack before taking another deep breath and going under once more. This time, he moved towards the tunnels. Maybe he could find more metal, he might be able to make some basic materials. Maybe grab some samples of plant life to see if the fabricator could do anything with it. The best case scenario was that he could find a way to make some batteries for powered equipment.
As he swam into the tunnels, he took a look around, keeping an eye out for more of those outcroppings. As he spotted them, he gave them a few quick hits before taking what came out. It wasn't just titanium either, he found the familiar hue of copper among the chunks that he broke apart. He had enough air in his lungs to go a little further into the tunnels too.
That's when he heard a little 'churl' nearby through the water.
His eyes snapped towards the sound, seeing a spherical red and white spiny fish emerging from a nearby plant. And it looked like it was charging straight at him, not good! He immediately started to backpedal, swimming as fast as he could to escape. However, the fish was, by far, faster than he was. He made a move to the side watching it blur right by him as it struggle to turn around, but that only meant the fish was in front of him. And right at the exit too. He froze for a bit, which proved to be a mistake as when it charged at him again, he didn't have enough momentum to dodge. Granted, he was quite sure he had, with the tip of one of the fishes spines just barely passing by...
The next thing Hoshi knew, his world had become pain. He could see the bubbles from where the fish had been and feel the pain from the explosion that happened slamming him into the wall, as well as in his chest from where it had occurred. It felt like it had come from the fish... but that felt insane. A creature that had a self defense mechanism related to blowing itself up? What evolutionary track lead to something like that?
He didn't have time to contemplate the bizarre possibilities as he realized the burning in his chest wasn't just coming from the impact of the explosion. His lungs were burning for oxygen. With the exit to the cave in front of him, he started to swim, only for a ruddy shadow to suddenly come into vision. His eyes opened wide as his mind, still out of it from the bizarre explosion jumbling his senses and in need of oxygen, immediately jumped to conclusions at seeing such a massive creature blotting out his vision. Screaming, he started to swim away from it... only to ram his head against the rock walls. Reflexively, his mouth opened up, water filled his lungs, and he ended up flailing around for a few moments before he blacked out, the last thing he saw being that shadow swimming towards him.
---
The first thing Hoshi did when he woke up was cough, water coming up out of his mouth. He could feel pressure against his chest, something pushing against it in a regular pattern. CPR of some kind? It didn't feel like a human hand though. It felt off by comparison.
His eyes opened up slowly, adjusting to the light as he realized he was above water. He could feel he was still in the water but higher up, in shallows. Shallow enough so that his head could poke out of the water... although not without something supporting him, it seemed like. He could feel his rear touching against sand and rock but his back was propped up by something different.
Soon, that ruddy figure came into focus again, right in front of him. Its eyes were looking right at him, almost looking 'worried'. Before he could try and backpedal away from it, he could hear a voice in his head.
<Are you okay?>
He froze as the words came into his head. Looking up to the creature, into its eyes, he could register that 'worry' properly. “Did you... help me?” he asked.
The creature nodded in response. The 'hand' that was against his chest moved away, letting him sit up more. It felt a bit sore but that could be because of the strange explosion from that weird... bomb fish. He'd need to double check and see if there was a medkit in storage. Maybe get what supplies he could from the emergency stores too to eat and drink and check the pod again. There should have been something for producing medkits...
“I... Thank you.” he said, reaching up to stroke the creature's head. It leaned in, closing its eyes in contentment as he did so.
As he started to slip back into the water, the creature lowered its head a bit. <Do you need to go back to that... um... life pod?>
He noted that the creature seemed to struggle with the word for a second, giving a little nod. “Yeah, that over there.” he said, pointing to the aforementioned vessel. “I think I got hurt from that... weird fish.”
<You mean the Crashfish?>
“I... guess?”
<Yeah, most fish avoid them. They're scary. Even Sandsharks don't like dealing with them since they blow up if they try to eat them.>
Okay, best to be more careful in the little caves then. Before he could slip into the water proper, the 'hand' beneath his back to prop him up moved away, with the creature sinking into the water, albeit staying up just enough for the head to barely poke out of the water. <I can help you get back. I know it isn't far but...>
After a little bit, he nodded, taking the offered help. Slipping into the water and climbing on top, he let the big creature take him to the pod. There was a moment where it dipped underwater as it got near, Hoshi having plenty of time to take a deep breath, even though it hurt a bit to do. With him being brought under the hatch, it took little time for him to climb off and slip back inside the pod.
One quick use of a medkit and some painkillers to dull the aching, as well as depositing the metals he collected, he climbed out of the pod through the top hatch. His head looked a little silly, with waterproof bandages covering up his wet blond hair somewhat, but it was helping to keep any bleeding down.
<Are you feeling better?> The creature was poking its head out of the water, looking up to him. Now that he wasn't reeling from the explosion, small as it was, and wasn't panicked about other threats, the creature looked rather... cute.
“A little, yeah.” He smiled to the creature, who seemed to be quite happy in turn. “I guess I got really lucky. I didn't expect to end up meeting intelligent life on this planet.”
<Oh, I came over here when I saw that explosion in the sky. Mom told me about something like that happening and people being stuck on here.>
“And... you wanted to make sure to help, just in case?”
A nod from the creature.
He smiled to them, slowly slipping down the pod and back into the water. “Thanks. I'm really glad to have the help. I don't know how long I'll have to stay here.” He looked up to the sky, letting himself float on the surface. “I'm gonna have to figure out how to make everything I need. If I could at least make a battery, I could make a scanner to figure stuff out. That would help a lot.”
He heard nothing from Qwib, not even the sound of him dipping back underwater. Soon enough though, he did notice him as he tapped on the human, getting him to look over and see the two mushrooms in his mouth.
“Um, thanks... Is this edible?” Well, he did need to eat. And he figured he was friendly enough, he probably wouldn't give him something that he knew would be bad for him. He started to bring the mushroom up to his mouth to-
<Wait, don't eat that! It's for making stuff!>
---
Hoshi looked to the PDA as he finished scanning the Leviathan's body. And he could for sure call it one now. Apparently, he was a 'Sea Emperor Leviathan Juvenile.' It would explain the large size of the creature. At this point, he had an oxygen tank set up, meaning he could actually stay underwater for a bit longer. However, he couldn't really talk with the creature without being above water.
Looking back to said creature as he hovered near the surface, he asked, “How did you know to bring me that mushroom?”
<Well, I remember Mom talking about stories regarding how people survived on this planet. And she mentioned they used those mushrooms to make some stuff she called batteries. Since you said you needed some...>
“Thanks, this will be really useful in the future.” Once more, he stroked the Leviathan's head, getting a little pleased sound from him. “So... what's your name? I mean, if you have one?”
<Qwib. That's my name.>
“Well, I'm Hoshi. I was a technician aboard the Polaris... Well, at least until it crashed here.”
He was silent for a while, looking out onto the horizon with the midday sun above. “I'm not sure what I'm going to do right now. At the very least, thanks to the fish around here, food and water isn't an issue. I'll need to gather more resources around here for sure... but I'm not sure how I'm going to get off the planet. Not to mention, what if there's others out there? This wasn't the only life pod, after all... The others could be in danger... but if I just rush off, what if I put myself in danger? I won't be able to help anyone if I end up dying...”
The two were silent for a while, the clear issues rather... stifling. Eventually though, Qwib nudged him as he floated in the water. <We can worry about that later. For right now, just... focus on staying alive. On building up. We can figure things out as they come up.>
“I guess you're right...”
After a few more seconds, Qwib had a thought cross his mind. One he relayed to Hoshi, who looked to him with some curiosity.
---
“Hahahahaha! This is awesome!”
Hoshi couldn't help but enjoy himself as he road atop of Qwib, skimming along the surface as the juvenile leviathan carried him around the shallows. He had figured that it might be a good idea to just... well, relax by swimming around, with Qwib carrying him around on his back. It'd be good practice for later, since Qwib could swim much faster than he could. That meant they could cover more ground and explore more areas more quickly.
Plus, it was just fun to ride a giant, friendly beast around. Just for a little while, Hoshi could forget about being trapped on an alien world, with no idea what life forms were around, if he was the only survivor, or even if he was going to be able to get off the planet.
It was easier to deal with all of that with a friend anyway.

I'd also like to ask if anyone would be interested in having their character be a survivor of the Polaris. If interested, message with who the character is, a quick description of their personality and what their role would be on the ship. Also, let me know if there's anything you'd rather avoid since future chapters might not stay tame.
