Happy Thursday folks! This is my first sheet of fungus artworks for Kaleida, drawn by the immensely talented Ryan Nieto. He's a delight to work with and passionate about speculative evolution; commission him immediately!
I've already come up with positions in Kaleida's ecosystem for each of these fungi (and 5 more that Ryan drew, which I'll show in a few weeks' time). There's:
Desert waxlobe (1) - an unassuming little fungus that shows up in a traditional stew made at the start of the wet season close to Kaleida's equator
Bowing agaric (2) - a marine fungus with a soft, bendy stem, which relies on the current to spread its spores
Cave stinkhorn (3) - a stinky mushroom that grows out of bloodied ground
Tushma coin (4) - a nasty, aquatic fungus that grows on tushma, a brightly-coloured poisonous sea animal
Scab cap (5) - an equally nasty mushroom that tends to pass between social apex predators, and is responsible for bringing the pinno' grath and kasulam together.
Fungi mostly break down dead matter, but they do a number of other interesting things including helping plants communicate and infecting living tissue, among other things. So weaving these bad boys into my ecosystem is all sorts of fun! I'll post each one with a profile over the coming weeks.
Possible ret-cons: None for now, although I am interested in introducing colour to these fungi and the ones on page 2, which I'll post up soon.
