Orlendr (pronounced Or-le-ndr, and meaning “outsider” or “stranger” in Old Norse) was once a human born with an affinity for magic, particularly shape shifting. In his culture, magic is rare, and exceedingly so amongst males. As such, it is seen as a feminine quality and even males with a propensity for magic are discouraged from practicing as it is seen as highly taboo. Despite this, Orlendr had a habit of running off in his youth, taking the form of a wolf to explore nature where he felt unbound by the pressures of his clan. Those who are gifted with magic are closely watched and controlled by his clan as magic is viewed as dangerous and deceitful. As a young adult he grew weary of the constant disapproving glances and the efforts to control every facet of his life. He made the decision to continue to cultivate his magic as he saw fit, essentially dooming him to self imposed exile. He would no longer be viewed as a member of his clan and afforded no aid or protections that they would usually afford their kin. So he went into the wilderness, venturing south, chasing tales of dead cultures and their magic lost to the ages. He discovered magics pertaining to fire and quicky became obsessed with pyromancy. Years went by and his isolation from society and his increasing time spent as a wolf rendered him wild and incapable of returning to his human form, forever more trapped in a state between man and wolf.
