Another round of beer and henal, with a plate of spiced roasted ‘epi and a shared plate of crunchy chips with a vegetable-based dip, and some time passed as the two Terrans and the vir chatted. Meredith glanced at her padd and Varan asked, “Is that Jinzi?”
The mare grinned. “She’s still asleep,” and she angled the padd so the vir could see the young filly. “She’s started walking.” Fuji licked foam from his upper lip and grinned as Meredith let him see. “Do you have time to come and see her?”
Varan’s ears flicked. “I don’t have too much time,” she admitted, “and I am seriously testing a captain’s prerogatives being here so long, but I wanted to see you both.” She stuffed another roasted lizard in her mouth and chewed.
She had no idea where the restaurant had obtained their spices, but their ‘epi were delicious.
“That does bring up a question,” Fuji asked.
“Ernnh?”
“We thought you were still at Wangguan,” Meredith said.
Varan washed down the ‘ep with a sip of henal. “Aka. We’ve been relieved, and the fleet was at Wangguan for repair and refit before returning to the Empire. Admiral Tajan had us stop here for several days before each division leaves for their bases.”
Meredith nodded. “I see. What about Vesan?”
“She and the other division commanders are with Admiral Tajan, and afterwards Vesan will be meeting with the captains under her command,” Varan explained. “She told me –“ Her ears flicked and she said, “That was the signal I was expecting. I must go, but I will return,” she added with a smile. “Don’t concern yourselves with the bill; I told the restaurant to apply all charges to my account.”
Meredith got to her hooves as Varan stood up. “Will you still have some time? All three of us could reserve time on a simulator.”
Varan smiled. “I’ll have to ask, but I’m sure that Frelen k’Daridh will agree.” All three of them joined hands and paws again, embraces were exchanged, and the vir left the dining area.
Fuji sat down and regarded his half-full glass of beer. “She looks well,” the bull said.
“Yes, she does,” the golden palomino said.
