Timeless: Herd Spearhead
Allied clans often rely on each other to claim the best territories for their herds. It's common for herds to be moved back and forth between summer and winter camps depending on the season and state of the pasture. Herds on the move are never mixed and contain only one type of animal.
To move an entire herd from a place to the other is a formidable task, requiring several riders to form a herding party called a "Spear." The Spear is divided in zones and riders should stay in their own zones to ensure safety of the herd. A proper spear needs at least eight riders, but this number easily goes up as the number of animals being guarded increases. All herd members carry a horn with them to blow in order to communicate with each other in the distance and here are different sounds for different messages.
The lead party member is called the spearhead, or simply head, and gallops in front of the herd, horn ready to signal anything unusual that may be spotted.
After him, on each side of the herd there is one rider, these are called sharpeners and their task is to help the head contain the animals, not letting them move ahead of the herd.
Behind the sharpeners there are the weights, and their task is to protect the sides of the herd, preventing it from spreading too much and keeping it in line with the other animals.
And finally, at the rear zone of the herd, there are the fletchers, whose job is to keep the herd moving forward.
Sometimes, when necessary, a rider will take the role of slow fletcher, and he will follow behind the main herd accompanying sick or injured animals that can't follow the main herd's pace.
Every spear also has a cook, someone who will be responsible for the food of the other riders.
Vygo has had the honor of being the head in many Spears.
