"The Witch and the Dragon" follows along the adventures of Leslie and Bolero, but it also follows the adventures of two equally important sidekicks, Colo-Colo is one of them.
Colo-Colo has always been a nervous wreck his whole life. It's obvious when Diego bosses him around or whenever someone mentions fighting a big monster that he is not up for the task. Despite being a wild animal who should be perfectly suited for life in the wilderness, there is a big reason why he's like this.
A cockatrice is a type of predatory carnivorous bird that can be found in various parts of the world. Most are the size of an ostrice and some are the size of a small raptor, no matter what size they're all venomous and very dangerous. Some time ago, magic-using humans discovered a bit of a "life hack" with Cockatrices, however. It was discovered that if you take the egg of a cockatrice and soak it in the blood of a bird and a snake, then perform a ritual around it, the chick will emerge with parent features where the blood came from (in this case it was an Andean Condor and a Green Anaconda) thus leading to the market of Domestic Hybrid Cockatrices.
The batch of eggs which contained Colo-Colo was also given another spell that would make them useful to their sellers; they were magically gifted with the ability to speak human words, thus making them talking animals that would serve humans. This type of spell shifts the mechanics of an animal's brain so that it can move its mouth and other body parts necessary for speech, but this rearrangement in brain structure also affects the creature's ability to survive in the wild since it affects their instinct and natural behaviors. All the others were sold off, but someone decided to purchase him and his brother as a pair. The two grew together for a couple months; Colo-Colo being the shy nervous one while the other took on the obvious 'big brother' role. The owner was preparing them for big tasks one day, but his brother decided that they deserved a better life, so they hatched a plan to escape and soon were running off on their own in the wilderness (the one place they couldn't live on their own). After running for what felt like miles they had no idea where to go, and soon were cornered by vicious predators. Hoping that his younger brother would live longer, the older brother distracted the predators and sacrificed himself so that Colo-Colo could live; all he remembered was his brother telling him to run no matter what, and to never stop running.
At the end of his rope, a young Colo-Colo chick was completely lost in the woods; no energy left to run, no one to help, and no reason to feel any sort of hope whatsoever.... that is until the old witch, Pachita, showed up and found him hiding in the bushes. Seeing the small defenseless bird cowering for his life, she decided to take him back home where he would be safe. There he met a teenage Diego, who at first treated him like a weirdo, but eventually learned to share his meals together. Pachita took good care of the two boys, and over time they developed a brotherly bond. Colo-Colo forever held onto the fear and the realization that he could never survive on his own, and mostly let Diego take the lead, but Pachita knew that one day someone would come along and give him an adventure that would provide him the opportunity to finally believe in himself.
ENJOY :D
