Into the bowels of the earth.
Deeper he went, and darker it grew. He never knew a place could get so inky black, piercing darkness surrounding him from all sides, only the faint glimmer of the moist walls that suffocated and pressed around him. The man hadn't known whether it was stress or armor that had been making him sweat so much, but he'd felt incredibly warm, the deeper he drew in the damp underbelly of the aged abandoned keep the hotter it grew, and the more wet it grew. Often he found his foot-wrap dip into a puddle, the sound of the still water rippling making him shudder a little, himself breathing out. So far he'd seen nothing down below, had it been ransacked already? Did his handler give him poor information? He cursed, he knew it would've been wise to question the townsfolk before he'd set out for the aged stonework, about half a day's walk from town... but he didn't wish to alert anyone, he knew how these things could be. As he softly breathed out he held his lantern up higher, bolstering himself. No, there must be something down here, especially with how deep this place was. He'd entered with a new candle in his lantern, and already it'd burned to about the halfway point, making him suspect he'd been down here for at least seven hours. It was always hard to tell underground. Slowly it crept in, as he continued walking down the halls of the dungeon, plodding down staircase after staircase, stepping into empty antechamber after antechamber... how was this structure so deep? He furrowed his brow, trying to steel his nerves, but it didn't sit right with him. The keep was on a hill, a good sized one, but this much time going down, it just couldn't be possible without burrowing into the earth... and yet here he was, pressing deeper and deeper into the bowels of the earth. It'd grown so hot, so wet around him, the walls practically sweating along with him. He'd felt a small amount discomforted before, but by now he was full-on uncomfortable. He hummed as he looked about himself, tightening his grip on the lantern, its light flickering around him, his only safety from the piercing darkness of the castle's underbelly. He was knowledgeable... he'd delved into demolished castles before, he'd pressed beneath the earth, even fought other tomb-raiders such as himself... He had to be fine, no no he would be fine. He wiped sweat from his brow as he rounded a corner, gazing down into the gaping inky black maw of another dark decrepit staircase... he'd be fine, deeper, he had to go deeper, he was sure of himself...
I've been wanting to draw some more atmospheric work for a while, I feel really happy with how this one's come out, even if it's just a sketch, and hopefully you guys like it too x3 -- I've been learning a lot about lighting recently, but I think you guys will see that better in my next piece (I'm still working at it, it's a commissioned work ^^) -- but until then...
Here's a song!
Cheers~!
