ah, I see. I just overheard that illithids initially were it's god-made thing, which then started spreading it's ceremorphsis. but I guess I got lore wrong.

Illithids are actually somewhat shrouded in mystery as to their origins, the two main theories being they're a race that was mutated/evolved in the Far Realm or they're a race of creatures that came back from the future to avoid something terrible be that a threat or a bad outcome brought about some other races actions in the past. Or perhaps even a combination of both!
