This is Matt and Joel as seen in Concession #374, which takes place a number of years in the future after the story's technical 'end'.

I work off the well-learned lessons from Back to the Future Part 2 and decided that fashion in the future will be stupid, featuring glowing clothing and tight bondage outfits worn in public. It's also a good way to show, in subtle ways, how their relationship is years and years in the future.

Sephiroth: The final boss to be in only pants and boots and lack belts and zippers in his prior forms. At least his jacket made sense otherwise based on the design. Belts aren't as likely to snap as much as buttons.
Kefka: The final boss whose final form consists of a toga. I don't recall his other forms specifically sadly other than being painting references.

It's only JRPG-ish if the belts are part of a shirt that has huge gaps in random portions that expose the midriff or parts of the character's side/back.
Otherwise it's just a guy who likes taking an extra half hour to go anywhere, cuz he's got to buckle and unbuckle all those belts. :D

Hmm.. true... and he IS doing that unnecessary layering by wearing the shorts on top of the unitard.
Let's just start from the top here: we've got a leather unitard, pants with tears, unnecessary belts and a collar.
Combine what we know about Joel's timeline and Matt's own glowing clothing, and I'd say we can jump from JRPG to cyberpunk territory.

Mind you, a LOT can happen in four years. I mean, we've discovered and successfully contained Darkmatter, we created nuclear fission years ago, and jetpacks are not common place in military bases and rich garages.
It's only a matter of time before the road's are closed so the government can implant some kind of weird magnatism strips under the surface, making it possible to make hoverboards work correctly.
Now THAT is weird, because it's possible.

I love the difference here... We've got Joel playing the submissive here... and he's the one with the huge pants bulge... but matt here. He's got Nothin there really. so it's Like... You Know it's there... >:3 but I'm hiding it so that you're none the wiser.

All fashion is stupid. In ten years do you think young people will look back and say, "Damn, those shutter-shades and fashionable headphones and mussed hairstyles were so cool."
I love Joel's look especially. I would wear that vest, it's just cool-looking. And I'm also counting on glowing clothes to be the norm in the future, because we have the technology and Matt pulls it off well. Even though I've never been much of a fan of his crossdressing thing.

Heh, So Joel replaced his sister when she left with Matt. Matt seems quite content being the one in control... it's always the quite ones you have to watch out for *snicker* .
Side note, very nice, Though I'd like to knoiw if the clothing they are wearing now are inside-out as well as being overly rediculos.

the more i look at this the more i realize that i will miss that comic and those characters
it was a great work man, heck it even got me over the awkward ness of dealing with homosexual and bisexual characters in stories, now i go by the simple matter of
its there, and i accept it, if people find love than it is good
i wonder what the world will be like in 10-20 years, will it be more accepting to these things? or will it be obliterated? so exciting to find out
