Once a hunter told me how you can tell when a pup is an orphan: They start leaving their den early and roam around, out of hunger. Because there is no parent to return to the den and feed them anymore, so the pup's hunger forces them to look for food themselves... often getting killed by something that hunts them in the process. ;-; Especially when attracting attention by calling for their parents out loud.
