Heraldry of the 945th Special Operations Wing
Special Operations Force 303 is often supported by several air elements during their missions. This ranges from close air support from F-15E Strike Eagles to airborne battlefield control from an E-3 Sentry AWACS. Due to the frequent need for support during operations, the 303 enjoys close cooperation with the Air Force, having an entire Special Operations Wing dedicated to providing mission-critical support elements. The four squadrons that make up the 945th SOW are:
554th Special Operations Squadron 'Silent Eagles'
Tail Code: MF (Mojave Feilds AFB, CA)
Role: Close Air Support
Aircraft Flown: F-15E Strike Eagle
The 554th S.O.S. are the combat component of the wing, providing a combination of ground-strike and air cover capabilities for the operators on the ground. The 554th is also responsible for protecting the airspace around the airfield by intercepting any aircraft that could stray into the restricted area surrounding the base.
967th Airborne Air Control Squadron
Tail Code: MF (Mojave Feilds AFB, CA)
Role: Airborne Early Warning and Control
Aircraft Flown: E-3A Sentry
The 967th AACS play an especially important role in supporting SOF 303's operations. This is because they can provide early warning of potential threats, as well as crucial information about the battlefield. They are also able to assist other airborne elements, acting as the communications hub of the entire airborne network.
818th Airlift Squadron
Tail Code: MF (Mojave Feilds AFB, CA)
Role: Strategic and tactical airlift
Aircraft Flown: C-5 Galaxy, C-130J Super Hercules
The 818th Airlift Squadron provide the 303 with transport for its personnel and equipment, making them a vital asset as this means the 303 can be deployed anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. The 818th can also provide the SOF with much-needed supplies during lengthy operations, as well as the ability for parachute insertions into combat zones.
929th Air Refueling Squadron
Tail Code: MF (Mojave Feilds AFB, CA)
Role: Airborne refueling
Aircraft Flown: KC-10 Extender
Being able to refuel without having to land is crucial for continuous support of special operations. As such, the 929th provides air elements supporting the 303 with the ability to replenish fuel quickly and efficiently, meaning they can support ground operations for longer and that the global reach of SOF 303 is continuously assured.
