When I opened my eyes, I discovered I was sleeping on a brown pillowy surface instead of my bed. I was only in my boxers that I wore to sleep but I had no idea how I got here. As I glanced around, the brown plush surfaces reminded me of a cave I went to explore when I was younger. Following the only path out of the cave, I collided into something covered in fur. As I lifted my head up, I noticed that there was a tiger mascot towering above me.
“W-where am I?” I asked, trembling in fear as it stared at me with its intimidating gleaming eyes.
“You’re in my den, and it just happens I’m hungry at this very moment!”
Before another word was uttered, the tiger took me by the shoulders and gulped me up in its cotton maws, leaving me screaming all the way as I slid down into its stuffing filled belly. While I tried to swim around in the stuffing, the cotton touching my body began to stick onto my skin, covering me up in some sort of fabric. The stuffing pushed me back up toward the mouth of the plushie and freedom was returning to me as I saw the tiger’s mouth again.
When I was spat out of the plushie’s maw, my fall was cushioned by the brown plush ground. However, I was in some sort of zipperless summer tiger outfit with short-sleeves running down to my elbows and covering my thighs, mostly orange with black stripes. Around my neck, there was some kind of red silky collar that was not too tight against my skin. Behind me above my rear was a stuffed tiger tail, along with a hood that had two round fuzzy ears attached. On my feet were two paw shoes with integrated fleecy socks, acting as my footwear for the moment.
“Human, you look purr-fect!”
“Really? A tiger costume? Do you want me to growl for you too? Rawr.” I said derisively, emitting a low effort roar.
“Oh, loosen up, human. No need to be so blunt. By the way, my name’s Stripes.”
“I’m Lucas. So, about earlier…”
“Yes, yes. You wanna know where you are right now. Come along, follow me out of my den and you’ll find out,” he beckoned, pulling the hood of the costume over my head to look the part.
Stripes pulled on my hand, dragging me along like a mother holding a child. I tried to tug my hand away but the tiger’s paw had an iron grip, giving me no other option to move anywhere else. When we were out of the den, I sighted a metropolitan city in the distance where there were more mascots along with their designated human companions.
“Lucas, welcome to Mascot City, where humans become pets to mascots and plushies alike.”
“Humans as pets? Am I your pet? No, no, no… I didn’t sign up for this!” I protested and struggled, stretching out the fabric on my tiger costume to tear it off, only to have the collar tighten around my neck to stop me in my tracks.
“Well, you’re my pet now and any act of defiance would tighten the collar on your neck.”
As Stripes rubbed at my collar, it loosened in a matter of seconds and I was gasping for breath.
“Fine… I’ll do what you want,” I obliged reluctantly, sighing as I got back on my feet. This time, Stripes did not hold my hand like before.
“It’s alright. Other humans also feel this way when they first arrive. For now, I’ll give you more freedom until you’re used to this place. You should count yourself lucky that you’re with me and not put on display as a toy for others to purchase.”
“A toy?”
“Nothing! I’ve said too much. Pretend you didn’t hear that,” he caught himself before revealing too much. “Let’s go visit the city!”
Strolling through the streets, the other humans in similar costumes seemed happy and waved at me enthusiastically with a smile, traveling alongside their mascot or plushie masters. Unlike what I had imagined what a human pet was initially, the people I saw were not on leashes or on all fours, walking as though it was normal. Glancing at the city, buildings and structures, even the streets, were made of plush material. Everything looked like a pillow and was huggable.
“Where are we going, Stripes?”
“To test the water. Since you’re new here, I would like to show you some of the main attractions I like to visit personally,” he answered with a wink. His words only made me wonder if he was meaning it literally or figuratively.
Stepping into a big blue plush building, the cushiony floor transitioned into a more plasticky floor. At the entrance, there was a sign that read, “Mascot Swimming Pool”. I guessed that he meant it both ways when he mentioned about testing the waters. Peering past the entrance, the pool area within appeared to be much bigger on the inside than the outside, and it was Olympic-sized too!
As we entered the changing rooms, I wondered how a plushie could swim as a stuff animal in real life would absorb water and sink if dropped into a pool. And there was another problem. I was still in my tiger outfit which was not suitable for a swim.
“Lucas, I’ll need to help you change your clothes, so don’t mind me eating you again.”
This time, I did not question it and willingly stood in front of him. After a hasty swallowing and spitting of my body, the tiger costume I wore transformed into a tiger-themed spandex wetsuit, running along my body down to my wrists and ankles. Behind me, there was a swaying spandex tail. The silky collar that was once encircled my neck became a loose rubbery choker, waterproofed for the pool.
“Now, it’s my turn!”
I observed in wonder as he put a plush digit of a paw into his mouth and began blowing onto it. Slowly and surely, the fabric of his morphed into a more elastic plastic skin, spreading around his body as he transformed into a bipedal tiger pooltoy. His paws turned into puffy inflated ones, squeaking on every wiggle of his digits.
“Pretty neat huh?”
“It’s a surprise to be sure, but how are you able to do that?”
“Magic! All plushies and mascots have magical powers from creation, allowing us to keep our human pets safe and comfortable, even if it means adapting to the environment. Time for a swim!”
While the tiger inflatable waddled his way toward the pool, I had no problems in my flexible suit. I climbed down the ladder into the waters of the pool and immediately felt the warmth the tiger wetsuit offered, unlike my other trips to the pool where it took time to warm up in my trunks. Stripes in contrast, leaped into the water and sent a strong wave that pushed me back to the edge of the pool. As he floated up to the surface, he had a cheeky grin on his face.
“You’d better swim or I will eat you!” He threatened as he drifted in my direction.
“That’s not scary now after you ate me twice previously, but I bet you can’t catch me!”
With swift strokes, I glided through the water as the wetsuit kept me streamlined, the tail somehow keeping my body stabilized as I swam. Behind me, Stripes kicked casually, catching up to me without putting in any effort, gently gnawing on my kicking feet every now and then. Reaching the other side, I turned a corner and he continued pursuing me, making me swim in a circular path around the pool.
After a few exhilarating laps of a watery cat and mouse game, I was exhausted and gave up, stopping in the middle of the pool and floated like a starfish on the surface. Stripes caught up to me and prodded at my sides as my body undulated in the waters.
“Whew! That was fun! Once you’re done, come find me in the changing room!”
“Alright… Ah…” I replied, continuing to float about aimlessly to recover my stamina. Once I decided I was ready to leave the pool, I climbed out through the pool’s edge and trudged my body back to the changing room.
Upon re-entering the room, Stripes had already reverted back to his plushie mascot self. Noticing my presence, he passed me a fuzzy tiger-themed towel. Whenever I pressed the towel on any parts of my face, it fizzled as steam discharged from the furry fabric, instantly drying my skin. Testing it on an area where the wetsuit covered, it dried off the spandex fabric along with my body underneath. It was like a handheld sauna, leaving me with tingles on every touch.
When I was finally dry, he retrieved the towel from me and gulped it along with my body, transforming my wetsuit back to the casual tiger-outfit and paw shoes. Following Stripes out of the swimming complex, we sauntered through the city, meeting other mascots and plushies with their human pets along the way. Looking at the sun high up in the cloudless sky, it guessed that it was around midday.
It was then I came to the realization that even though half a day had passed, I was neither hungry or had the urge to use the bathroom. Finding it kind of strange, I tapped on Stripes’ plushie shoulders to get his attention.
“Yes, Lucas?”
“I don’t seem to feel hungry or need to use the bathroom. What’s going on around here?”
“Every human need is constantly satisfied by the magic that surrounds this world, so you don’t need any necessities and such. That also means you can’t even age or die here.”
“Woah…”
“But speaking of hunger…” Stripes licked his lips, his eyes filled ravenous intentions. “I’m hungry for some snacks!”
“Didn’t you eat me several times today? Wasn’t that enough?”
“No. I didn’t really eat you, just merely processing you inside my stuffing to put you in different outfits. Magic does not satisfy the hunger pangs for plushies and mascots as easily, so I’ll have to eat from time to time to replenish my cotton. To the Plushie Meadows!”
Stripes quickened his pace and I followed behind, brisk walking past the plush buildings until we reached the end of the street. He continued into the outskirts of the city, the streets fading into a soft grassland, where the grass felt more like a fluffy rug to my paw-covered feet. When he stopped abruptly, I collided with his back, my rear landing among the fuzzy grass. Around me, there were holes in the ground that led to darkness.
“Time to catch some prey!” He said, reaching his tiger paw into the hole and immediately pulled out a bunny plushie, popping it in his mouth like a piece of candy. I gave him weird looks, pondering about whether this was ethical or plushie cannibalism. “What’s wrong? Go on, reach into a hole and grab a bunny! Don’t worry. They breed a lot so I’m just helping to reduce their numbers.”
As I plunged my hand into the darkness, I could feel something fleecy inside, shifting ever so slightly to avoid my hand. Pulling out a bunny plushie, it was trembling in my hands, its plush incisors chittering with a terrified expression on its face. Instead of doing anything to it or passing it to Stripes, I embraced the plushie affectionately and it stopped trembling. Eventually, I lowered it back into the hole, letting it go free.
After some time had passed, Stripes was full and he was ready to go, patting his belly to indicate so. He lay his plushie arms on my shoulders, taking me for a walk through the forest in the outskirts of the city, a detour from the normal path to spend more time with me as we progress back to the den. The afternoon turned into the evening as we passed by countless trees, the city still visible through the plush greenery.
“You know, if you’re ever tensed up, you could hug any of these trees. That’s what I like to do before you arrived in my den.”
I raised an eyebrow before wrapping my arms around the puffy trunks of one out of curiosity. It was like I was hugging a body pillow, but somehow, it could still stand upright with the weight of the fabric leaves and branches above despite being made of a pillow. Letting go of the tree, I turned to Stripes and embraced him with my arms.
“I think I’d prefer hugging you instead,” I stated as I buried my face in his gut, my voice muffled through his fur.
“Aww…” He hugged back in response. I was slowly fitting in and now, finding love for the mascots and plushies in Mascot City.
Upon returning to the den, I yawned and stretched my arms, ready for an early night to start another full day of cuddly adventures. Stripes stood in front of me, gesturing to his open maw.
“Yup. Just go ahead,” I said, already blasé to being eaten and spat out.
With an audible gulp, he took me in for slightly longer this time before pouring me out of his mouth. I was now clothed in something different. I was in a comfortable tiger kigurumi onesie, slightly baggy around my body and not as tight as the tiger outfit I had been wearing the whole day. It had a long tail that dragged along the ground when I moved about and had a set of integrated paw shoes to keep my feet warm during the night.
Entering the depths of the den, Stripes and I laid down together on the plush ground, looking at each other lovingly as friendship formed between us.
“Goodnight, Lucas, my little cub.”
“Goodnight, Stripes, the gobbler of bunnies,” I said with a chuckle, nuzzling my head into the fur of his chest, curling up with him with a beaming smile.
Although my freedom was lost to a stuffed tiger mascot, I enjoyed my time here, learning to stay with the living mascots and plushies around.
When I opened my eyes, I discovered I was sleeping on a brown pillowy surface instead of my bed. I was only in my boxers that I wore to sleep but I had no idea how I got here.
