Trapped in Alpha Insta!
1 year trapped in a square …I mean on Instagram!
It was on this day last year that after straight up refusing to use it, I joined Instagram as ToonThick!
But do I really care?
Sure, I've had more success on there than anywhere else, but in reality I'm bowing to Zuck; the same Zuck that started Facebook nearly 20 years ago!
I once used Facebook, from 2011 to 2014. Then I left for good. That was the last time I used social media personally.
I tried Instagram back in 2017, then left after an hour. I decided to give Insta another go, because of another senseless billionaire now hellbent on the Cybertruck. My Instagram trial succeeded because from my point of view, it became more user-friendly (desktop uploads, dark mode).
But that doesn't stop the fact that I've gone backwards with social media. Instead of bowing to one billionaire, I'm bowing to another. I'm also endorsing AI-generated content whether I like it or not. Everyone using Instagram is!
There was a good reason why I stopped using Instagram on my phone (as well as the Stories feature); it's an algorithmic mess! If I looked at one suggested post for just half-a-second, I'll get more such suggested posts based on that one post!
Since I consigned my use of Insta to desktop, I haven't bothered to browse others' posts. The same goes for Threads. I'm now mostly active on Bluesky and FurAffinity.
I'm now in a position where I can give big corporations the big FU, and leave both Instagram and Threads. I can try and offer commissions again, and not be run over by algorithms, the far-right and my exact location.
I may have an established presence on Instagram, but it's probably all for nothing!
Lil' Thick and I know that there's a clear blue sky up ahead. Lil' Thick just needs to get out of the OG Insta square!
