As a fair number of people have guessed, Jenni Fulton - one of the Typhoon Twins - is named after comic actor Rikki Fulton. Outside of his native Scotland, the latter is probably best known for his appearance in the 1983 comedy-drama Local Hero, as lab technician Dr Geddes (who, incidentally, was the inspiration behind Alasdair's surname). Maddi Norton, conversely, gets her name from Alex Norton, who played fellow technician Dr Watt in that same film.
In Scotland, however, Rikki Fulton is perhaps best remembered for Scotch & Wry - a comedy sketch show which ran on BBC1 Scotland from 1978-79, and was subsequently resurrected as an annual special every New Year's Eve (or Hogmanay, as we Scots call it) until 1992. By far the series' most famous recurring sketch was Last Call, a parody of late-night television sermonettes. Rikki Fulton appeared in these sketches as a succession of ministers, with the most iconic being the perpetually downtrodden and miserable Reverend I.M Jolly. So popular was Jolly that he appeared in several spin-off specials throughout the 90s - outlasting not only Scotch & Wry, but the original sermonettes he was parodying!
Fulton's work as a whole remains a Hogmanay staple to this day, so in deference to my own Scottish roots, I thought I'd use my last submission of the year to pay homage to the man, with this picture of my own Typhoon Twins seeing in the new year in a rough approximation of the set from which I.M Jolly used to present his Last Call.
