Last week, I ended 2023 with an homage to Rikki Fulton's Last Call, which is a cornerstone of Hogmanay celebrations here in Scotland. So I thought I'd begin 2024 with another tradition of that hazy period between Christmas and New Year's - the enjoyment of one of those good old-fashioned country pursuits. For a few hardy souls, this means diving into their nearest body of freezing cold water. This tradition, while absolutely ludicrous, is surprisingly common in a number of countries.
I recently discovered that one of those countries was Canada, which gave me the perfect idea for yet another picture of Jaws MacTaggart and Evelyn Clapton back in their younger, stupider days. Only someone like Jaws would be mad enough to take the plunge into these icy British Columbian waters in the dead of winter - let alone get someone like Evelyn to follow suit.
Loony Dook, by the way, is the Scottish name for this particular tradition. Technically the name only applies to one particular dive in the Firth of Forth, which takes place every New Year's Day as a charity event. However, a number of similar events have sprung up on other coastlines and river estuaries across Scotland.
