Is it bonding with the Heavenly Dog?
Sarohtama, partially Tengu and partially Celestial, considered himself a capable assistant towards the high-ranking Celestial, Aether, whose view on Sarohtama was more platonic, though he did find value in the younger’s efforts. He was either ignorant or wholefully neglectful of any affectionate feelings that Sarohtama had for him.
But a significant escalation of built-up emotions between the Tengu and his feline superior occurred during a late evening in the celestial gardens.
Beautiful petals sailing down, dancing in the wind, yet the air was comfortably warm.
Sarohtama had decided to take a chance, and had invited Aether out to one of the gazebos outside their usual building of operation, to spend the afternoon away from possible interruptions or spying eyes.
He had hoped to make it somewhat of a date, but his hopes had been dashed when his superior had arrived with handfuls of charts and scrolls, as well as some bottles of presumably refreshments.
Nevertheless, the Tengu Wolf wasn't about to resent his superior for lack of tact. He was always business first, after all...
They spent most of their time there going through the relevant topics, proposals and requisitions.
When evening was quickly approaching, they were finishing up the business for the day, with Sarohtama doing his best to start casual talk, though he had never been socially strong.
Perhaps it was something Aether picked up on, for he retrieved one of his bottles that had been untouched so far.
He asked Sarohtama to fetch two glasses from the gazebo storage, which he did, of course.
Aether then tipped the bottle, and poured out the contents into the two glasses.
To Sarohtama's surprise, it was not clear water, but golden bubbling liquid that was served into the glasses. Champagne, Aether had explained shortly.
He wasn't one to drink leisurely, but perhaps he felt like rewarding Sarohtama for his hard work recently.
In any case, he offered a glass to Sarohtama, who gratefully accepted it. Young as he may look, he was well mature enough to drink. But that didn't mean that he was experienced with it, either...
The carbonation almost burnt his throat as it went down, but it was having a definitive effect, as warmth was rising in the wolf's chest.
As he took another swig from his glass, conversation was coming out more naturally, he wasn't hesitating to state questions to Aether as they talked.
They conversed regarding the known activities in the organization, about Emerl the big lion who had frequent visits from a four-armed feline, and about the state of the celestial gardens...
Eventually, the subject seemed to gravitate back towards the two of them, when Sarohtama's glass was practically empty.
He stuttered, begging for Aether's attention, before blurting out his confession.
He was met with a long silent stare... which made him panic.
Desperate to motivate his case, he would go into a spiel about how he felt towards Aether, elaborating on the comfort he felt around the larger feline, different from that which he felt from either Emerl or Jonaqui. A desire to be held close by his superior, to lock the door to the outside world and share long physical moments...
He felt his eyes stinging from potential tears as his voice died down, agonizingly awaiting Aether's cold judgment.
The response was... different.
No verbal abuse came his way. Neither came sweet kisses or embraces.
Aether had reached out his hand, and placed it on top of Sarohtama's head.
There was a pause, and then his fingers started moving, gently scratching through the fur on the wolf's head, which started tingling.
It was very different, in fact. Emerl had rubbed Sarohtama's head many times, but never had he sent tingles down the wolf's spine and across his shoulders as Aether now was.
The wolf felt his head loll down, leaning into the loving scritches given to him by a seemingly different provider.
With the wolf calmed, Aether proceeded to respond, explaining how he didn't have any romantic interests in anyone at the present, regardless of gender or species.
He conceded, however, that Sarohtama's confession was touching. He had been quite unaware of his subordinate's feelings, despite all the hints that Jonaqui had dropped.
Nevertheless, while the wolf's feelings were not mutual in the feline, Sarohtama's ears vaguely registered a promise to respect the wolf's feelings, as he had great appreciation towards him.
Aether was gradually becoming unsure that his subordinate was paying attention, however. His expression was that of a blissful dreamer. It was an interesting look on an oft expressionless face.
"Would you like me to rub your head like this again?" He finally asked.
A moment's pause—then..
"Yes, sir. As often as I could ask for..."
