Pony Tarot Nouveau (Bouts)
These three cards are called the trull in Tarock games of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, but "ends" or oudlers in French Tarot. Regardless of provenance they are the most important cards in the game – they are worth 5 points or thereabout each whereas most other cards are worth only 1, and in French Tarot the number of bouts taken by declarer determines the point threshold for winning.
As such I felt compelled to pay special attention to the design of these cards in my Pony Tarot Nouveau. The Petit (atout 1) and the Excuse (fool, complete with feathered cap and mandolin like the actual card, but effectively atout 22 in Tarock games) were easy enough, but I had only written Smarty Pants for the Monde (atout 21) when I assigned characters to cards at the outset, with no clear idea other than the stipulated theme of "collective foolishness." Eventually I settled on the flower trio foolishly geniefying themselves in my beloved tradition – bound to one vase – and summoned by Derpy Hooves, the greatest fool among ponies. Coincidentally, Daisy is also called Flower Wishes.
