"Salty's Lighthouse" is an animated television series for preschoolers. The series was produced by Sunbow Entertainment and aired from October 3, 1997, to June 26, 1998, on TLC in association with the Bank Street College of Education in New York. The show centers on a young boy named Salty, as he plays and learns with his friends in a magical lighthouse. As well as the animated adventures of Salty and his friends, the series uses live-action footage from the British children's television series Tugs for various segments. 40 episodes were produced in the series.

This is a show I do remember in its entirety, unlike the PBS series "Shining Time Station." Why? With that program, I only remembered the Thomas the Tank Engine segments, not the whole show. (That was the point, though, to introduce Thomas to America.) Tugs was the sister program to Thomas, and it was adapted in the U.S. for "Salty's Lighthouse."

NOTES: Following the initial airing of the series of Tugs throughout 1989, television rights were sold to an unknown party, while some models and sets from the series were sold to Britt Allcroft. Modified set props and tugboat models were used in Thomas & Friends from 1991 onwards, with footage from the original program being heavily dubbed and edited for use in Salty's Lighthouse.
