Anders, Raider of Mossflower
Bit of a Redwall themed alt for my otter by the Amazing
alexjohnson93
Anders MacEroch is a mercenary and a raider, sailing the rivers of the woodland and beyond in his longship “The Elvedrakkar” in search of wealth and glory.
After growing up an orphan with several other youths, he turned to a life of raiding upon finding an old longship washed up on the shore and taking it for himself in his mid teens. After several years of wanton raiding, with any who dared stand against him meeting a swift end, he began construction of a circular wooden fortress at a fork in one of the many rivers, sitting on both banks with gates and chains blocking passage along the river. The original longship became the roof of the treasury within its walls, and he began amassing his wealth there, and after some more time had passed, a village began to spring up around it, which Anders takes great pride in caring for ensuring its development and wealth are admired.
He no longer raids as often, or as senselessly as he once did, and often sells his sword, and that of the small fleet he’s amassed, to woodlanders in need, and even once or twice to the great Redwall Abbey, which he admires for their altruism but mocks for their naivety. What sort of group fashions themselves as defenders of the woodland, has suffered tens of dozens of attacks over the years, and still has no standing force garrisoned within, often asking the surrounding woodlands to come and protect them when push really comes to shove?
Anders doesn’t make himself out to be anything he’s not: he enjoys wealth, and the act of taking it, and he’s not above a little bit of extortion to gain it. He hasn’t fully attacked a woodlander settlement in almost a decade, since most know better than to not just hand over whatever he demands (which is less and less in recent years), but he’s not afraid to knock some heads and bloody his blade if some upstart decides to stand up to him either.
He’ll never fight for the vermin armies that so often attack the woodland, but he also won’t go out of his way to fight against them unless they threaten his holdings and vassals.
He has a soft spot for cubs and can often be persuaded to work for free if any are in particularly life-threatening danger, and many of his non-“vermin” crew are orphans he’s taken in, or former orphans who he grew up with and helped raise in his younger years before fully turning to raiding, many of them joining in for the promise of plunder and adventure. There is a sizable orphanage built adjoining the walls of his fortress that is funded almost entirely through raiding wealth.

It’s one of my biggest sticking points with Redwall, the disparity in species goodness.
The “Lost Legends of Redwall” games try to rectify that a little bit without straying too far from the theme (there are some friendly stoats), but the stuff with the rat kid always ticked me off at the end of the story of Matimeo. “Yeah, I know we’ve never met a rat who wasn’t actively working against us and that they’re inately evil, but we’ll let this kid in and treat him well. Ope, he’s betrayed us! Couldn’t have seen it coming. Oh and look, he’s unceremoniously killed at the end of it all by the actual villain just before he stumbled into a pit”

oh I could have a whole conversation about this and have lol. Think a lot of it comes down to the lack of resources in the world of Redwall more or less trapping various species in their ways. Combine that with bias developing over time you end up with a system that's quite hard to change up significantly. Throw in it's a medieval setting and superstitions and such will probably run rampant.
I have had some serious fun with this though in the TTRPG testing I've been doing for a setting heavily based off Redwall. Used a stoat and a shrike so far then played heavily into the tropes which created a pair of very interesting characters. When the stoat merc could take the money and run he did so. Meanwhile the shrike is loyal as hell but is also a very predatory bird who purposefully plays into the biases of those around him for his/his crews benefit.
