Why is the riot part so important?

Because people, even queer people, tend to treat it as a party and forget and/or ignore that what brought us modern pride and queer liberation movement started out of a riot against police repression. Treat Pride as a party all you will, but never forget where it started from, and the sacrifices it took to make it into a party. Because that road has blood on it.

So when organisers try to focus on profitability by ticketing it, or trying to appeal to corporations by sanitising it of the very people that made Pride into what it is by making it apolitical or clean ("No Kink at Pride" and all). Or letting fucking cops parade. Then we have a problem.

First Pride was a protest. First Pride was a riot. Those who were there faced immense hostility, violence bloodshed. If we forget that, we go back to square one. Which is what is happening already.

But it's not 1969 anymore and the people talking about Stonewall live in western countries.

It's not 1969 anymore, and yet even in western countries, LGBT/Queer people are seeing increasing state repression, hatred and assaults. I've attended more than my share of vigils for murdered queer people in London. If anything, now is THE time to remember that Pride was a riot. Just as corporations and politicians need to be reminded that welfare state and workers rights was the compromise for not putting CEOs on a guillotine and not eating our Prime Ministers alive.

Furthermore, people in Western countries may not suffer as badly, but queer people in other parts of the world are, and Pride events in the West are their only outlets and sources of activism absent police repression. We need to remember that their struggle continues even as we party, and need to keep the spirit of the original Pride alive for that reason.

We aren't living in dictatorships in the west. Violence now is going to turn more people against pride.

In any case, I've grown past that "if we act X way, people will turn against" attitude when Brexit happened. I worked so hard to be the ideal, non-White, non-Christian immigrant to show I could fit in, that people like me are not a threat. And yet, supposedly-progressive friends still voted to hand the life I've painstakingly built over 10 years (at the time) to literal fascists because they offered a trade deal with China. At that point, I saw that I could try as much to not turn people against me, people still will. Stopped giving a fuck after that.

Same here. Those people aren't looking to not have a riot, they just want us to be as quiet as possible so they don't have to feel bad when they're killing us. Well fuck that. Which companies? Because someone's small business isn't exactly hurting you, and yet many riots burn those down anyway. If those were the only businesses destroyed during 2020 you'd have a point........ but they weren't. Many small businesses were destroyed and a dozen people even DIED in the riots. Funnily enough many of those business owners who lost their source of income still support the movement. Do you think the majority population, LGBT or not, will support lgbt causes if rioting and violence is associated with Pride or the lgbtq community?

You seem to forget that violence often makes movements fail and even gives governments reasons to crack down on those movements along with making the average person see the movement as bad. You need good optics or you won't make any progress. You're setting gay and trans rights back decades with this 'we need to be violent and anyone not 100% with us is against us' attitude. In any case, Russia and Turkey were democracies. Flawed as they may be, they were. I grew up in one of those places, and I recognise the language being used in the West, for I've seen the same language in Turkey and Russia when things were getting bad. If you think Europe and the US aren't on the verge of becoming as these places, you are living under a rock.

As for Conservatives looking to kill LGBT people, just look at Project 2025. They are the people bankrolling Trump (Heritage Foundation). They're already threatened LGBT people, they already made life hell for them in places like Florida, Texas and Alabama. So how about you wake the fuck up and recognise the danger we are facing.
