It's Shark Week, which means I'm going to be starting a new tradition on both this account and on FA, where I would make a shark-themed deviant to celebrate Shark Week. In this case, a spec evo reimagining of the iconic SyFy x Asylum shark movie, Sharknado.
Lifespan: 25 years
Length 5-7ft long.
Bio: Sharknados are a species of specialized shark that taken flight that is convergent with flying fish, turning their pectoral fins and event heir dorsal fins into rudementary wings, with the dorsal wing acting to increase drag should the shark fly too fast. Their tailfin has even evolved to fold on itself to maximize areodynamic efficiency. Similar to an Arapaima, the shark is an obligate airbreather, meaning it has to surface regularly to breathe.
This change from water to air breathing was likely in correlation to its lifestyle of leaping out in the air to catch any low-flying prey. As the Sharknado evolved to become efficient at leaping into the air to catch flying animals, its gills gradually played less of a role in respiration until eventually becoming vestigial, with its liver becoming modified to take up the role as the Shak's "lungs".
The species got its name when a marine biologist discovered the then-unknown species of shark deliberately swimming towards a waterspout, a tornado that forms in the ocean. The name "Sharknado" came from the marine biologist's first thought when laying eyes on this spectacle. While the name, Waterspout Shark or Flying Shark would've been much more fitting for this species, addmitedly, the marine biology who named this species of shark was a firm believer of "Rule of Cool." Further solidifying this name in the mainstream public eye was a song created by the Quint band. This song is known as "The Ballad of Sharknado".
By an unkown sixth sense, Sharknados are capable of sensing which tornados/waterspouts are powerful enough to lift them into the air and to swim towards them. Sharknados ride these waterspouts to get the best attempt to eat birds or any edible debris that were picked up the storm. They do this by swimming up in the direction of the waterspout's spin before slingshotting themselves in the desired direction.
While this is an ingenious way for the Sharknado to hunt prey above the sea, it's also a good way of getting the shark killed. Sharknados that fly too high up when being slingshot run a high risk of losing control of their sky maneuvering. Similarlyh, riding a tornado/waterspout that's too close to shore will have a high risk of the Sharknado getting beached.
=Trivia=
* This might be my most biologically questionable spec evo animal design yet (this even includes the Voridians, a nocturnal human subspecies that exists primarily to be the walking embodiment of vorarephillia), and somehow I love it.
* Given that this is a spec evo take on a concept originating from Asylum, a movie company infamous for their brazenly laughable logic on scientific accuracy, being about as accurate as their chances of winning an Oscar, I decided to be much more lenient on evolutionary limitations than I would normally be.
I do not own Sharknado. The movie franchise (Yes, there is a franchise) belongs to both SyFy and The Asylum.
