I'll admit that I sometimes like a fancy painted tie and a flashy pair of shoes if I'm going to a party, but I certainly agree with your "formal" notes if I'm going somewhere more, well...formal. It all depends on the event that I'm dressing up for.
I'm a bit of a Vintage Clothes Enthusiast, and I enthusiastically agree that the older suit cuts are not only more comfortable, but also more aesthetically pleasing, for the same reasons that you so well outlined with this submission.
While I was in college I routinely visited the old-clothing shops in search of nice suits/jackets/ties/etc. I once scored a salmon pink tweed suit coat with gold and silver metallic thread woven into the fabric.
I loved that metallic pink coat. It suited my rockabilly aesthetic very well, and what's more, it upset the right people when I wore it to church.
