If you don't want to do that but still want to see a bit better, and you're viewing this on Fur Affinity, consider checking it out on Weasyl as well since FA tends to scale images down if they are above a certain size, while Weasyl, to the best of my knowledge, does not.
Find Me On:
FurAffinity ◈ Weasyl ◈ Ko-Fi
At the end of September, after quite a bit of a hiatus and a few extra hours at work resulting in my Nice Things Fund building back up a bit (wish that had continued, because now we're back in Struggle Mode... and then like a month after I placed the order, the keyboard on my Chromebook decided that its entire row of number keys didn't need to work anymore) and a couple conveniently-placed specials and promo codes from Budsies, I decided "why not" and decided to take a shot on commissioning a cuddly 3D version of my depressionsona, Nick. Things were briefly looking a bit more hopeful, and it felt like the timing was right.
I was initially wary of trying to get any humanoid characters made owing to how my drawing style doesn't quite work with humanoids, along with seeing a few odd examples of Budsies' work with humanoid characters (and, of course, concerns about The Uncanny Valley when dealing with any sort of humanoid figure/doll/toy), but much like how I had developed a strong emotional connection to Nico and Dominika, I felt the same sort of longing to be able to hold onto Nick. After seeing a few more examples of humanoid characters by them that looked quite nice, and of course being tempted by discounts, I decided to roll the dice.
Of course, this all flies in the face of my previous, probably-too-harsh initial review of Dominika (I did post a bit of an update later where I ranked her at a 4.4🦊 fox emojis out of 5, and as she's been here for a few months I'd actually bump *that* up to a 4.5 or 4.6 out of 5), where I mentioned I was probably done with custom plushies simply because of the cost.
Anyways, review time, since rambling is one of the things that still engages me, somehow.
What I like!
Upon opening the box, he was face-down so I was greeted by his tail. This time around, I opted for a faux fur upgrade to his tail, to make it stand out from the rest of him. The fur is very soft and pleasant, and reminds me of a few other stuffed animals I've acquired over the years, especially Tino.
And now... the amazing attention to detail.
The detailing on his face is superb, heavy on the embroidery, but a perfect match for how I drew him in his refsheet, right down to the number of freckles. I'm also very happy to see that his nose is, well, a nose, and not simply an embroidered detail as well--while nowhere near as squishable and fun as Nico's nose, it's still pretty spot-on and exactly what I was hoping for.
Eyebrows, glasses, those little raccoon mask marks around his eyes that look like he just hasn't slept in his entire life, his vaguely sad/tired expression, his little protruding tooth, all on point.
The detailing on his hair is quite nice too, having some shape and structure and detailing to it just like Nico's, giving it, well, shape and structure (this was, honestly, my major complaint with how Dominika's was done, the lack of any sort of detail or structure in favor of a soft but loose bit of plush fabric--of course, once I understood what the designer was going for with that and how it allows her hair to drape over her shoulders and curl a bit around her neck and cheeks, I was far happier with it than I had been initially). He's also got his lil' beard.
I was also very happy to see how lovingly his raccoon t-shirt graphic was recreated, the one detail I figured would be omitted. On the subject of clothes detailing, his shorts have the seams and pockets and stuff embroidered on, even the little back pockets I myself often forget to include in art of him. Nice detailing on the socks with the stripes, and his shoes look amazing, having both the tongue and some detailing for the velcro straps and the general structure of the shoe, so it looks like a proper sneaker rather than simply a slipper.
(I guess none of my characters can be bothered learning to tie their shoes, or knowing the sort of dorks I tend to have, couldn't be trusted not to mess it up and trip over their own shoelaces constantly, on-the-fly lore reason for velcro could also be getting finger fur pinched in laces when tying them I guess.)
Color matching is pretty good, too--I know I tend to favor a certain palette and it just so happens to be a palette that doesn't *quite* match their selection, so that's on me.
He also seems to have had a much gentler trip this time around, arrived in the proper sized box and his refsheet was printed out in full and not crumpled up--I'd even go so far as to say the printing seems more vivid than either Nico or Dominika's.
Super minor nitpicks.
None of this stuff actually matters too much, but in the interest of objectivity...
Head seems a bit small but I sorta expected that. I have no idea how to draw proportions even after spending over 20 years drawing cartoon critters, and I'm sure translating my designs from 2D to 3D is generally a bit of a pain.
Also his neck is a little thin, but I can just find him a bandanna or something if it actually bothers me too much.
Not really a nitpick per se, but he doesn't seem to be stuffed as "fully" as Dominika and especially Nico, which leads to his legs being a tad less rigid than the twins, so he's harder to stand up. Trying to pose him with Nico (who is also loosening up slightly with age, after a year of being cuddled on and such) and Dominika had quite strong "School Picture Day" energy as I struggled to get them all to cooperate.
This does, however, add a bit of character, as the way his "knees" were buckling slightly (along with his expression) made him look a tad nervous, or more likely (and definitely in character with Nick), like he needed to pee.
"Uhh, dude... sorry to ruin the reunion, but... I just had a long trip and I *really* need to pee."
Other thoughts:
Definitely glad I gave Budsies another shot. Definitely back to "strongly recommend" status, but keep an eye out for those discount codes and sales. If I am ever in a financial situation where I can afford it again, I'd still love to see their take on a character like Ivaylo Boscov or Tex (either were-coyote, or since this came out so well, her "true" demihuman form) or even Hendrick or Dumptruck--and in particular, I'd be happy to request this specific designer to work on a Jack Hawthorne or maybe even Dominic "Skunk Boy" Mephitto someday (although there is a bit of uncanniness to the idea of having a plush character that looks so much like myself that makes me hesitant to want to do so).
Much like what happened with Nico in 2023, deciding that I wanted a plush version of a character I had been mentally spending a lot of time with did manage to get me back to drawing, at least for a little while, so it's probably worth it just for that. I had to find something to do to keep myself occupied until he arrived, and of course waiting for him gave me a reason to stick around, as lame as that may sound (and as contradictory to some of my rambling and thoughts on him and what he represents, and his relationship with Dominic Mephitto this may seem--that character arc at least has something of a happy, if not a tad bittersweet, ending).
After Dominika arrived, I had sorta wanted to try making an unofficial guide to ordering from Budsies based on my experiences--I remember being super awkward about it all three times, the same exact sort of awkwardness I feel any time I try to commission or request art for myself. Motivation and moods failed me, but I thought it might be interesting to place photos of the Dominika and Nico plush besides their drawn counterparts, and maybe talk about the ordering process and the timeframe a bit, in case anybody out there is an awkward dork like me and would find such insight helpful or interesting.
I love how large these are, but I do find them a bit too large to easily carry around and have photoshoots with, which unfortunately means I'm mostly stuck in my room taking pictures of them on my bed with less-than-ideal lighting and a very uninteresting background. I'd love to get some photos under better lighting, and especially get some photos that have a bit more artistic merit than "hey look at this plush I got", like I did with little Phoenix a few times in summer 2023.
Also... from the moment I placed the order, my mind made the comparison between Nick arriving in a white box barely big enough to hold him, and Goku returning to Earth in that spherical space pod. Nick is 100% the type of nerd to make that comparison, if I ever get motivated enough to do so, it might be interesting to try to emulate that scene from Dragonball Z but with Nick wearing that unusual outfit that Goku was wearing when he emerged from the pod.
(I'm not sure how well Nick could deflect a sword with just two fingers, but I'm sure Nico could pull off a Future Trunks cosplay very well... assuming Nico and Dominika wouldn't just cosplay the Androids instead!)
