i just overdid it and muddied it a lot lol. maybe try gouache, i found it easier, and definitely instructive when i started doing watercolors again too. as for some really random tips (bc im not all that good at this, i just tend to be pretty curious and willing to fuck up my own drawings), i found it easier to use a cheaper set of pan watercolors rather than using them from tubes, i dont rly know why but it was more approachable at least. second, the most useful tool for me when i paint with watercolor is a paper towel or tissue. its actually rather easy to undo mistakes by wetting the paper, rubbing at the spot a bit, and dabbing with a tissue. also having it on hand is good for emergencies, its like a quick undo button. im rly bad at being patient with my washes but i generally tend to just stay away from the areas that are wet and work on other areas while i wait. if thats not possible, just be patient. you can test the papers wetness by checking with the back of your hand if its cool to the touch. once its equalized to the rest of the paper youre good to go. dont be afraid to layer freely tho, ur probably not gonna mess things up that bad if its a little wet. just make sure that ur brush isnt too wet bc thats usually what fucks me up. just have a test paper on hand or dab on the paper towel a bit before laying anything down, better safe than sorry after all. i havent dont very many watercolor pieces yet but thats what ive picked up.
