Muttropolis - To Kill a Mockingbird
My boyfriend is a huge bird nut. One of his favorite birds is the mockingbird. He finds them cute, plucky, and their song to be beautiful.
He's never had one perch outside his window and sing at all hours of the night, until recently.
We have a resident mockingbird who's decided to shout his "Hey Ladies!" song, starting at midnight and going all night. It's hot, so leaving the windows open to air things out means we get the full force of the song. We scared him out of the tree but he just keeps coming back. Hopefully tonight will be better.
As for my boyfriend, I wonder if he'll rethink his choice in feathered favorites.
*EDIT* Well, we scared the bird off at 11, he came back at 4 AM and sang all night. And great news! He's learned how to imitate the wild parrots that live in the area. AWK AWK SHRIEK SHRIEK SHRIEK!
I wonder if there are freelance falconers who will work for cheap.

You can always try a wire detonated small firecracker.....
Blow a few of those randomly, and he will probably decide to move elsewhere.
Or if thats too much, a light up pumpkin or owl..With maybe a soundmaker inside..With a wire remote leading back inside that you can set off whenever he starts singing...
Or maybe you could just string christmas lights in the tree.
(I'm told this works for some bird pests by making the roosting tree too weird for them to tolerate at night.)
Never had to scare off a mockingbird before though, so I'm not sure how brave they are.
(We had one that nested in the oaks behind my grandfather's house, but he never sang at night that I can recall.)

Putting christmas lights on the tree may be an option. Anything with a noisemaker negates the purpose as we need to sleep. With the noisemaker on, it still creates noise that is not fun to sleep to -___- Skorzy is a very very light sleeper.
And mockingbirds are surprisingly brave. Skorzy played several sounds of its natural predators. It paused its song just a few seconds, then continued screaming. Didn't even move.

Once the barn owls moved in it did! XD But then I heard the baby screeeee'ing all night. Yay for earplugs again lol. I wish I knew some safe deterrent for those mockingbirds but man, I've seen them chase off crows and they're SO territorial o__o; It's a tough problem those birds :/ We have a scrub jay that likes to make noise in the morning but he copies all the sounds he's heard and one is a car alarm...now THAT is annoying x___x! Good luck to you guys on getting them to quiet down though!
I'd say try a fake owl but they'll get wise to it especially since they're not even scared of crows much bigger than themselves.

I've heard that the fake owls work only sometimes, most of the time they just ignore them or poop on them x__x
I used to have barn owls living in my roof, I know all about the screeching! Still, that was intermittant and I could go back to sleep. This mockingbird I think naps in 10 minute periods every 4 hours, otherwise its nonstop.

Whoa...that's excessive to the max. I'd maybe borrow a high powered pellet gun and kill it. I know that seems terrible and extreme but...I don't know anyone who would come out and take the bird or figure out how to catch it. If you could catch it somehow and release it somewhere else that would be best but I know life doesn't work that way sometimes :/ Gosh that's horrible though. I hope you figure out some way to get some rest because that's ridiculous :(
Fortunately last night he shut up and we were able to get some sleep. He's singing in his usual spot this morning but all that matters is he's quiet at night. Skorzy shook the branches of the citrus tree he perches on every time he sang there so I think he thinks there's a predator in the orange groves that wants to eat him and he's found somewhere else to sing at night. We'll know for sure tonight XP
I've got the exact same problem with this bird that tweets the *exact same tune* over and over. I've even got the melody memorized tweet for tweet!
I managed to scare it off with some gunpowder bangers the other day but lo, it's chirpin' away once again outside my window. Guess I'll have to think of a more... convincing method next time...

I'm kinda lucky, I don't have that kind of stuff. But, in exchange I get foxes that cry out in the middle of the night -_-

They ARE beautiful birds and INCREDIBLE mimics! I've heard them sing half-a-dozen different bird songs in a row, all mashed together. Still, when you're trying to sleep...Hopefully, he'll attract a mate soon and get down to the business of raising some little ones, thereby leaving you guys in peace! Cute piece and story (but not fun for you)!
