Sandbar and Yona were both sadly walking to the train station. The school year was over and it was time for the students to go home. Neither pony nor yak wanted this to happen, but the train back to Yakyakistan was waiting for them at the station.
Both of them had brought their saddle bags to the station as they saw ponies getting on board. Yona looked towards Sandbar, looking very upset. “How long is Summer Vacation again?” the yak asked.
“About three months,” Sandbar answered. Both of them sighed as they knew it would be a long wait. “We could still write letters to each.”
“But mail takes more than a day to respond. Yona can’t wait that long for a response.”
“I know, Yona. We’re going to make it work.”
“...Yona wished yak and ponies had a faster way to talk far away.”
“Me too. Until then… We’ll still have the letters to send.” Yona just simply sighed as she walked inside the opened coach. She and Sandbar waved goodbye as the doors closed and the train pulled out of the station to the Crystal Empire station. Sandbar managed to put on a smile until the Friendship Express was out of sight. He let out a sigh as he sadly walked away from the station back to his home.
Once home, Sandbar lies in his bed thinking about his friends. He looked to a photo that showed him and his five friends. He wished there was a way he could talk to them, but letters had to travel to them and that took time. Not to mention a rare chance of the letters getting lost on the way.
Sandbar wished for a faster way, it just didn’t feel right being without his friends. He looked over to his saddlebags, which he had yet to empty from their last day of school. Seeing he had nothing better to do, Sandbar got up and decided to empty his bags. He accidentally dropped something from it.
When he looked to pick it up, he could see some kind of green rectangular object. He managed to pick it up and saw there was a black screen on one side with a button at the button of it. “What’s this?” he asked. Sandbar pushed the button and the screen lit up to show the current time and date, and there also looked to be some kind of picture.
It looked similar to the one that Sandbar had of his friends, but these creatures were all bipedal, had standard shades of hair, and all were wearing clothes. Two of them were pretty interesting, one of them was a young boy with blonde hair, wearing a turtle necklace, tank top, shorts, and sandals with his arm out of frame as he was the one taking the picture. The other one was a brunette who wore a green sweater that had a snowman on the front.
Sandbar didn’t know what these creatures are, but the blonde guy and brunette looked familiar to him. He was about to question this more until he noticed something pass by his window. Looking outside, Sandbar noticed there was a hippogriff outside. Actually, there looked to be a couple of hippogriffs flying or walking around with the ponies.
“Where did they come from?” Sandbar thought. Wanting to have some answers, the colt walked out of his house to walk around Ponyville. It was puzzling when he saw all hippogriffs and even some pegasi stop flying and just walk around. Sandbar was confused by this until he noticed it was suddenly getting hotter.
As the young pony tried fanning himself, a familiar hippogriff walked over to him. “Hi, Sandy,” called Silverstream.
Sandbar was surprised to see his friend still in Ponyville. “Silver, what are you doing here?” he asked in surprise.
“What do you mean? I live here,” she responded. “Wish we still had the others.” She walked off as Sandbar was feeling a little confused. He didn’t pay attention to his tail suddenly wrapping around his flank. It felt weird as his tail quickly became beige and started taking on the look of shorts.
Sandbar was shocked and tempted to take them off, but when he remembered he was in public, something made him think that would be a bad idea. Instead, he started to follow Silverstream as he was feeling a little confused.
Silverstream skipped along the street as Sandbar felt that the temperature was rising, like the sun was getting stronger. When he got another look at his hippogriff friend, Silverstream was now wearing a blue skirt. This wasn’t the only thing he was confused by the fact she was wearing a skirt, but also the fact she wasn’t flying.
Someone with the amount of energy Silverstream possessed should’ve been flying all over the place. She then drew her attention to a nearby Shave Ice stand, which she brought Sandbar closer to. “What flavor do you want?” she asked.
Sandbar was stunned for a short minute before he looked up at the various flavors. He saw that Silverstream began looking through a purse before she pulled out a few dollar bills, which was a little confusing to the earth pony. “Um… You uh…”
“Having trouble deciding? Want me to pick for you?” Sandbar just nodded as he tried to understand what was going on. He watched Silverstream hand over the papers, thinking they worked the same way as bits. Sandbar almost didn’t take into account that Silverstream was missing her wings.
He was handed a shaved ice, which was looking appetizing given how hot it was getting. Silverstream started to enjoy her shaved ice as she and Sandbar both gained tank tops, a hot pink for the hippogriff, and light green for the pony.
“I think the heat is getting to me,” Sandbar proclaimed.
“Maybe we should head to the beach to try and cool down. Maybe you can help Terry and Me learn how to surf.”
Sandbar had never considered that before. It had been ages since he went surfing ever since he started high school. “Yeah, it’d be worth trying,” he agreed. With his spirit rising, Sandbar would enjoy his shaved ice as neither of them saw their fur and feathers shedding off their bodies.
It was almost jarring how good these shaved ices tasted, it felt nostalgic to him. He and Silverstream stood on their hind legs as they walked off. “I missed the beaches,” Silverstream commented.
“I know, I forgot how warm it got here,” Sandbar added. “Almost makes snow seem like witchcraft.” Sandbar frowned as he was thinking about someone else.
“Hey, I’m sure she misses you too.”
“I know.” Sandbar checked the phone in his pocket just as his hooves started to split apart into a pair of fingers, allowing more dexterity so he could hold his shaved ice better. Neither of them could see the creatures around them having similar changes to what they went through.
Most of Sandbar’s fur had faded away at this point, so it was good that his body was covered up with his new clothing. His hooves would stretch out a little bit and gain a few toes. He wiggled them a bit as his sandals helped to give his feet protection given how they were more sensitive now.
It didn’t take too long for Sandbar and Sylvia to finish their snacks as they could see the beach in the distance. “Think we can run home real quick and get out swimwear?” Sylvia gasped.
“I think we’ve got a chance. I could get my board too!”
“Perfect! I’ll meet you back here!” The two friends ran back to their houses, which were thankfully close to the same beach. As they raced home, Sandbar’s head was the only pony part of him left, making him look kind of odd.
That would change once his ears shrank and moved to the sides of his head, making their sensitivity weaken. His muzzle would also shrink quite a bit, with some of his teeth getting sharper to get more meat into his diet. His nostrils became a smaller nose, his hair lost its color and became more of a blonde. Every bit of Sandbar’s equestrian routes, now he was a human teen known as Saul Bridge.
He managed to make it home and headed to his bedroom. It was a typical room that had everything a teen like him would need, but there was one thing that was special to Saul: his surfboard. He quickly took it off a stand his dad helped him set up when saw something on his bedside; a necklace with a turtle shaped gemstone.
Saul remembered where he got this, it was a gift from his girlfriend, Yonah. He sighed before he looked at his phone and decided to text her. “Hey, Yonah. How was your trip home?” he texted. He placed his phone down so he could get changed into his swim trunks, knowing it would take a while for a response.
Yona walked up the mountain back to her home of Yakyakistan. There were plenty of yaks wandering around the snowy kingdom, doing daily activities. Yona sulked back to her home where her parents were happy to welcome her back. They were a bit concerned about her depressed look.
“Why Yona not smile?” her father asked.
“Yona missing Sandbar,” the young yak sighed.
Yona’s mother comforted her daughter, knowing she would miss her special someone. “Sandbar kind pony,” she informed. “He missed yak too. Try writing to Sandbar.” Yona just sighed as she looked outside.
“Why not Yona smash stuff?” her father asked. “That always makes yak happy.” Yona just nodded as she decided to go and find something to smash. She glumly walked past a couple more yaks, who were happy and unaware of her emotional state.
The young student eventually found a pile of miscellaneous items that the yaks would smash in their free time, such as furniture, broken equipment, and even an old wagon. Yona tried to pick which item to choose until something caught her eye. It looked like a bar of chocolate, which made the yak excited until she picked it up. She saw the chocolate was only a cover for the kind of object that had a black screen.
“What is this? Why not chocolate?” Yona questioned. She could see a button on the base of the device and pressed it to figure out what it did. The screen turned on and showed the current time, but it also showed a picture of three… Creatures. They all had hairless skin, the smallest one looking kind of pale.
They only had hair on their heads, with the biggest of the group having some on their face, and they all wore winter clothing. Yona was confused by this image as she felt a big gust of wind. Yakyakistan had windy weather at times, but Yona never felt such a chill like this before. She carefully put the object in her mouth, still disappointed it didn’t taste like chocolate before she ran back to the huts.
As she ran, back to the huts, Yona felt like the cold wind was making her a little numb. Her horns were starting to tingle and her hooves were starting to feel a little uncomfortable. She felt like she needed to get to the sleeping hut, but something seemed to be off. The young yak could see the huts were starting to become square and the materials looked off too.
Most of the huts were made of dirt, but panels of wood started to grow out of the walls, each hut having a different color, red, blue, cream, and many others. Yona was even more confused when the huts all started taking on square shapes or when some of the snow was starting to melt in certain places
Taking a closer look, Yona could see the snow was melting into paths as some translucent rocks were starting to appear where it melted. “Where salt come from?” Yona questioned. She felt the material crunch under hooves. She then shivered as she could feel the wind hit her in the face, feeling like it was getting colder by the second. She would’ve just run inside one of the changing huts, but they didn’t feel right to her.
The yak tried to run and try and find her hut but she felt her hooves shift. It was almost like they were becoming a different part of her body she could just remove. The hard hooves started turning into wool and leather, making the changing yak uncomfortable. The hard material vanished briefly as Yona could see some pale fingers growing from her hooves. She looked back at hind hooves to see they had stretched into L-shapes.
Yona wiggled her fingers and toes before they were quickly covered up by wool materials, which were black mittens and socks. The socks were covered up with some winter boots that matched her new mittens. Yona looked at her new clothes and already felt a little bit warmer, but these bits of clothing could only do so much. She had to get inside somewhere.
“Snow colder than usual,” Yona groaned. She started running down the cleared street as she could see some other yaks starting to stand on two legs instead of four. It was confusing to the young yak until she instinctively stood up on her hind legs. “Why weird stance?” This was something she wanted answers to, but she also wanted warmth from the cold.
Yona shivered a little as she had never had an issue with snow before. She had enough and looked for any place to get inside, so she raced into the first changing hut she could find. The changing yak saw it was bigger on the inside, and there were a couple of other yaks inside.
Most of them were at tables and chatting with each other. Yona sniffed the air as most of her girth was starting to fade. “Is that…. Chocolate?” she questioned. She could see a yak being handed a mug of fresh hot cocoa, a nice warm treat for somewhere so cold.
Yona felt like buying one as some of her wool changed into a pair of pants helping to keep her warm. She got in line as she checked her pockets for some money, finding some papers that she knew as krona. She began to remember the exchange of this and American dollars being more complex than she wanted to.
“Hej, vad kan jag ge dig?” Yona glanced up when she heard the voice. She looked at the yak behind the counter, who looked like they were getting less hairy and slimmer. The young yak rubbed her head as her ears shrank and her hearing weakened.
“What?” Yona asked.
“Vilken drink skulle du vilja ha?” The older yak asked. Yona could see their chair getting neater and tied into a ponytail and their bangs were shortened so their eyes could be visible. This would help make reading her facial expressions easier.
“Um…. Jag ska bara ta lite varm kakao. Liten tack.” Yona didn’t know how she just said all of that as the woman behind the counter nodded.
“Och kan jag få ditt namn också?”
“Yonah.” The woman would take Yonah’s order as the girl couldn’t help but feel something was off. It had been a little while since she spoke Swedish regularly, so she hoped that she wasn’t rusty.
She felt something snug on her head, which turned out to be a snow cap that used to be her horns, which were no longer there. Yonah took it off as her braids were now loose, she found a table to sit at while waiting for her cocoa.
There was some kind of sinking feeling she had, with how the yaks were acting, how colder it was, and buildings looking different, did her home change that much while she was in the states? Suddenly, Yonah felt snug. She looked down and could see she was wearing her new favorite sweater, it was green and had a snowman on the front.
She remembered when she got this in Pennywood from Saul. Yonah smiled as she remembered when she was given it to help make her feel more at home during her first school year. Then she remembered Saul asking her to the dance, which Yonah thought could’ve gone better, but they still had fun.
Yonah grinned as her muzzle shrank quickly, helping to give it a smaller and even cute appearance, with a different nose along with all of the fur fading away. There wasn’t any trace of a yak left on the girl simply known as Yonah York.
“Liten kakao till Yonah York,” called the barista. Yonah saw her cocoa was ready, and in a to-go cup. She picked it up and headed back outside into the snow. Now that she had the proper clothing for this weather, Yonah didn’t mind the snow so much now. She had grown up here most of her life, so she and her family adapted to it, plus the nice warm cocoa helped too.
It didn’t take long for her to return home. Once inside, Yonah would take off her boots, gloves, and her cap so she could get comfy in her bedroom. Once Yonah sat down on her bed, she sipped her cocoa as she checked on her phone.
She found it cute with its chocolate themed case and the background image showing herself and Saul. Even though she was happy to be home, Yonah felt sad that they would be apart until the next school year. She placed her cocoa on her side table when she saw she got a text. “Hey, Yonah. How was your trip home?” it read.
“I’m fine,” Yonah texted back. She kept thinking about her boyfriend and wondered if texting was enough. She figured giving him a phone call might be better. Yonah quickly gave him a call, hoping Saul would pick up.
After a few tones, Yonah finally got an answer. “Hello?” responded a voice.
“Saul? It’s me, Yonah. Just letting you know I made it home.”
“Oh that’s good to hear. Sylvia and I made it home too, we’re just enjoying the beach right now. How are you?”
“I’m good. Got home and I’m having some nice cocoa.”
“Oh that sounds so good. Sylvia got us shaved ice.”
“What’s shaved ice?”
“I’ll make you one when we meet up again. Just have fun at home and maybe we can have a video chat later.”
“Oh, that sounds good. I…. Won’t ruin your fun at the beach.”
“That’s alright, Yonah. I don’t mind you calling, I love spending time with you, no matter how far we are.”
“Th…. Thanks Saul. Hope to chat again soon. Jag älskar dig.”
“Love you too, Yonah.” Both boyfriend and girlfriend ended their call, they would miss each other, but with their phones they were still able to send messages and make phone calls. This kind of tech would help keep them close together.
It's been a while since I've written a Dequestria story, but I think I've finished this in time for Valentine's Day. Hope you enjoy.
