Ace Up the Sleeve
A/N: This is my second attempt at creative writing. Like the first story, it is based on these amazing artworks (https://www.furaffinity.net/view/29703191/)(https://www.furaffinity.net/view/20946851/) by Auroracuno
I wanted to try combining two characters into a story that at first didn’t seem to go together (a plush dragon and a latex snake). Sorry it took me so long to write it. College has been kicking my ass, especially with graduation approaching. I’m also posting this at 3 AM so I apologize for any oversights or errata. Please let me know what you think! Hopefully my next story goes more smoothly.

“I did it… I did it! I finally beat you!”
Blackjack looked in incredulity at his own cards: three of hearts, king of spades, and seven of clubs. His opponent’s cards? Queen of diamonds, seven of hearts, and four of spades. 20 to 21. As much as he hated to admit it, his opponent was right: the casino owner lost. Out of five games, the score was 3 to 2 in the human’s favor. So close, yet so far…
“Give me back my friends!” The human demanded with a fiery anger in his eyes.
The damned serpent had tricked his comrades into signing away their lives with all bets rigged against them. But despite the odds, he managed to beat the devil at his own game. He bet his own life, and the snake took him up on his offer, confident the human would lose. The look of defeat on his face now was priceless.
“Hmm, very well,” Blackjack sighed, “your companions are free to go.”
He snapped his tail and immediately a group of staff wearing uniforms in the style of playing cards broke out of their trance-like states. Their dazed expressions were replaced by pained grimaces from the pounding in their heads. Still, they were back to their regular selves. Their friend smiled at them, taking his attention off of his slithering foe.
It’s a shame, really. I would’ve taken such good care of you, Blackjack thought to himself, longingly gazing at the human across the table from him. You were easily the most alluring of them all; you could’ve been one of my favorites.
He watched as the human ran to his friends, who were very surprised to see him as he tackled them to the ground in a hug. He was smiling through his tears as his confused companions tried to comfort him, “Oh I missed you guys so much! I’m sorry for hugging you tighter than my teddy bear, but I never want to let go of you again!”
Blackjack recalled that the human had a Pokémon-themed phone case, so when he heard those words, it gave him an idea. A devious idea.
Well then, if I can’t have him…
As the group began to make their way to the exit, Blackjack laid his tail on the winner’s shoulder, “Wait, you still need to collect your prize for winning.”
Immediately the human froze and slowly reached up to take the tail off of his shoulder without turning around. He already knew what, or rather who it belonged to. The tail was somehow both warm and cold, and it felt like gelatin and a truck tire, all at the same time.
“I already got what I wanted. I don’t care about any material prize you have to give me, monster,” he spat out the last word like a poison.
He resumed walking towards the front door, although now at a faster pace. The spade-decorated snake quickly placed a coil around his torso and turned his body, forcing him to look the rubber reptile in the face.
“Oh, come on. At least let me tell you what it is,” Blackjack tried to convince him. “I heard from the grapevine that you like Pokémon. Is that true?”
While struggling to get the coil off, the human paused and gave a brief look of surprise. He was silent for a few seconds before he slowly responded, “How’d you know that?”
The snake gestured towards his phone case.
“Oh. Well why do you care?”
“Because…would you be interested in a Pokémon toy?” Blackjack asked with a smirk on his face.
The human stared at him and pondered for a moment. “Well, if I already won it, then I guess it’s okay. I mean, it’s not like a toy can hurt me.”
Blackjack laughed in a quiet, deep voice, “Oh, he definitely won’t have any intention of hurting you.”
The young man’s head snapped back up, “What did you just say?”
“Nothing,” Blackjack said as he let the human go. “I’m just excited to show it to you.”
“Right…” Something about that serpent really felt strange, and not just physically. Part of him wanted to bolt out those doors and never look back, but the other part was captivated by the enigma around this prize.
Who knows? Maybe it could actually be good, he thought to himself.
“Follow me,” Blackjack gently commanded as he guided the human through the rest of the casino. They made winding turns past countless machines with spinning lights and stages with performers before they arrived at an unassuming door hidden away from the other patrons and staff. Blackjack turned the doorknob with his tail and pushed it open. The human peered into the dark room, and a cold breeze made his hair stand on end. But strangely there didn’t appear to be any windows.
“After you,” the serpent said. The scowling human only stared at him.
“Please, I insist,” Blackjack coaxed, putting on his best disarming smile.
“I’m not entering that room until you go in there first,” the human said, crossing his arms.
The playing card-patterned python rolled his eyes, “Very well.”
The human watched his long body slither into the darkness; he hadn’t realized how massive this serpent was. Hesitantly, he followed behind. Soon, he could barely see the space in front of him. He really started to regret leaving his phone at home. Then, the door softly closed, and the whole room was sent into pitch black nothingness.
“Hey! What the hell? Turn the lights on!” The human shouted.
He heard a little ‘click!’ and a few fluorescent bulbs overhead flickered to life. As his eyes readjusted to the light, he was greeted by the sight of an enormous black, serpentine dragon with yellow lines and circles running along its entire lengthy body. His mouth slightly hung open when he realized exactly what was before him.
Is that…is that a shiny Rayquaza?!
“Impressive, isn’t he?” Blackjack’s smooth voice sounded from directly behind the human, making him yelp and jump in surprise.
“Don’t scare me like that! Jesus Christ!” The human instantly spun around to face the latex snake.
“He’s quite beautiful, don’t you agree?” Blackjack’s face had an expectant smirk.
“Huh?” The human was confused until Blackjack gestured to the dragon. “Oh, um, yes. It is very…well, it’s certainly something,” he said, glancing back at Rayquaza. He didn’t want to admit that the fanboy in him was fawning over how cool the Sky High Pokémon was. Although it seemed small compared to the gigantic room they were in (why was the room so massive to begin with?), the black Pokémon still completely towered over him.
But something in Blackjack’s words puzzled him. “Wait, ‘he?’ Is that thing…real?”
Blackjack laughed. “You’re amusing. No, he’s only a toy. A stuffed animal, to be precise.”
“But it looks so…lifelike,” the human said, fully turning around to face the toy again.
“He certainly does, almost as if he could pounce on you and coil you up at any moment,” Blackjack remarked.
Stillness fell over the room as the human continued to gawk at the plush until Blackjack said, “He’s yours to take home.”
The human couldn’t believe his ears. “A-are you saying that this is my prize?”
“Well, if you don’t like him, you can always just turn around and walk away. You don’t have to accept him.”
“No no no,” The human started, “I do like it, it’s just…” He paused, letting his logical thought catch up. “Frankly, I don’t trust you. I know what you are. You’re never this generous. There’s always some sort of strings attached. No, I won’t accept it,” he declared, firm in his resolve.
The serpent would have to change that.
“Let’s be reasonable here. I’m giving you a prize that you won fair and square. What strings could possibly be attached to that? It’s not like you’re signing away your soul.”
“Maybe not, but there’s probably some spy camera hidden inside its eyes so you can stalk me. They do look like they’re watching me.” The human felt a mixture of fear and awe.
“Besides,” he added, “how could I even carry this thing home? It’s huge! Even when coiled, it would stretch from my floor to the ceiling!”
Blackjack laughed with his deep voice. “Just wait until you see Groudon and Kyogre.”
The human was stunned. There were more?
“But you need not worry about his size,” Blackjack coaxed, “I will personally deliver him directly to your house, if you so desire. But why don’t you give him a hug now? It doesn’t have to be big, just a little one, so you can feel how soft and warm he is?” Blackjack’s tail gently pushed him towards the gargantuan toy.
“Wait wait wait, back up a bit…literally and figuratively,” the human said as he turned around and put his hands up in a defensive motion. “What do you mean Groudon and Kyogre?”
“Ah, of course. I completely forgot. Pardon me. Rayquaza wasn’t the only prize you won,” Blackjack smirked as the human’s eyes widened once again. Now I have you.
The rubber snake slithered to wall behind the plush and tapped some code on a number pad. Almost immediately, two large panels in the ceiling began to slowly descend, and the human heard the cranking of a crane above him. He looked up, and the human couldn’t believe his eyes. He saw the unmistakable forms of the masters of land and sea.
How is this possible? Groudon AND Kyogre?! They’re almost as huge as Rayquaza!
Unlike the Rayquaza toy, they had their standard color schemes and were a little bit smaller, but that didn’t make them any less spectacular to the human. Now the whole Weather Trio was present, and he could take them home!
“Of course, I can deliver these to your home too, but it might be a little cramped with all three in there,” Blackjack nonchalantly stated.
“Okay, now there has to be a catch,” the human said. “I can maybe, maybe believe that you would give me one prize, but three? Nuh-uh, I’m outta here.” He turned towards the door again.
Blackjack sighed, “How many times do I have to tell you? I have no desire to trick or deceive you. Wouldn’t I have done so already if I truly had ulterior motives?”
“You always have some trick up your sleeve, though. It would be exactly like you to feign innocence,” the human retorted.
“What must I do to prove to you that I have no malicious intent? They are completely harmless,” Blackjack insisted, gesturing to the plushies.
“Well, why do you want me to hug the thing so badly? You see, that’s what makes me think it’s a trap of some sort. How about you hug that plush first? Show me that it’s harmless,” the human responded, crossing his arms.
“As you wish,” the serpent said as he slithered over to the black Rayquaza plush. He loosely wrapped his tail around the plush’s body beneath the claws. The human watched him in apprehension for half a minute before the latex snake turned to him with a mildly impatient, unamused expression.
“See? Nothing. Do you believe me now?” Blackjack slithered away from the plush and behind the human.
“Ehhh, I guess,” the human hesitated as he stepped a bit closer to the Rayquaza plushie, “But I still have this bad feeling and—”
His words were cut off as he was pushed from behind and face-planted into the black serpentine dragon.
“Oh dear, my mistake~,” Blackjack snickered.
The human pressed his hands into the plush to push himself up and regain his footing. “What the hell was that for?!”
“I just wanted to help you get more acquainted with him.”
“Why the hell would I have to get acquainted with a…toy?” The human paused as he glanced up and saw the Rayquaza plush now looking at him with its yellow, glowing eyes and grinning at him with its zipper mouth.
“Uhh…how is it…?” The human started before Blackjack completed his thoughts.
“Moving? Alive? Magic is certainly mysterious, isn’t it? Hehehe…” Blackjack said as he slowly moved his tail towards the human’s legs.
The human quivered in fear as he tried to back away from the Rayquaza plush’s piercing gaze, but fell over with a yelp as he tripped over the latex snake’s body. Blackjack wasted no time in taking advantage of the human’s surprise as he quickly coiled the him from his ankles up to his shoulders, pinning his arms to his sides. The human grunted in frustration; the serpent’s grip wasn’t suffocatingly tight, he still couldn’t move.
“Hey! What gives?!” The human shouted. “I knew this was a trick! I knew it!” He was worried he would be absorbed into the snake’s latex body and made into a thrall like his friends were, but Blackjack had another idea in mind.
“Relax. He just wants a friend, and you’re perfect for him,” he said with a devious smile.
Blackjack firmly held the human in place as the Rayquaza toy reached down for him. He uncoiled his torso, making it open for the dragon to grab him. As the plushie clamped its claw around the human, it expectantly leaned its head towards Blackjack.
“Oh, how could I forget?” Blackjack lifted the end of tail up to the plushie’s zipper tag and pulled across, opening its mouth. “There. Now you can give our friend a…warm welcome,” Blackjack quipped with a smirk, looking at the human.
As Rayquaza began to lift the human into the air, Blackjack uncoiled around the rest of the human’s body, giving the plush dragon complete access to him. The human was soon at eye level with the soft beast; his heart pounded wildly in his chest.
“P-please don’t kill me…” the human whimpered.
The plushie cocked its head to the side in confusion while Blackjack rolled his head back in uncontrollable laughter.
“Hahaha! Oh, you’re hilarious. I told you: he wants you as a companion and has no intention of harming you,” Blackjack said. “You see, these plushies need a human or other warm-blooded being to touch them and liberate them from their dormant state.”
So that’s why he was able to make contact with it… the human realized.
Blackjack continued, “The more energy someone radiates, the more attracted these toys are to that person. And you, my human friend, are radiating like a star. Normally Rayquaza would need quite a few people to fly around and remain active, but you are teeming with so much energy, he would only need to capture you. In fact, you have enough energy that he just might be able to…”
As if on cue, the Rayquaza plush began to glow a bright purple, and as a swirl of wind and smoke began to obscure it, the human saw a rainbow helix forming above the plushie’s head.
Is that…? No, it can’t be.
The strange cloud sphere seemingly shattered, and revealed something the human would have once found exceedingly awesome, but now considered terrifying. He was now in the clutches of not just a Rayquaza, but a Mega Rayquaza plush.
Oh, oh no…
The human began struggled to break free from the toy sky serpent’s claw as if his life depended on it. The Mega Rayquaza plush was even bigger than its regular Rayquaza form, so much so that it had to crane its neck so its head wouldn’t bump the ceiling. It had the same piercing eyes and zipper smile, but this time with a hint of smugness, like it knew it had won. The human didn’t care if this thing wanted to be his friend. He knew that whatever it desired couldn’t be good. But he couldn’t so much as budge an inch.
“You can struggle as much as you want. It won’t do you any good,” Blackjack called up to him. “In fact, it might even make it more fun for him.”
The plushie gave a quick squeeze with his claw, letting the human know he wasn’t escaping. Mega Rayquaza then turned to its plush Weather Trio subordinates. Its free claw and tail tip became coated in a bright blue aura before it tapped their heads. These plushies started to glow the same purple aura like Rayquaza before two more smoky spheres formed around them. Instead of a Mega Evolution symbol, this time omega and alpha symbols appeared above Groudon and Kyogre’s heads.
The human knew what was coming next, but he still didn’t want to believe it. When the transformation finished, the much bigger Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre plushies seemed to stand at attention, as if awaiting command. The human’s thoughts were spinning inside his head in a chaotic vortex. How is this possible how is this possible how…
Suddenly, a large cloud of mist fell over him, and he felt like he was drowning in a wave of exhaustion. He looked up and saw Rayquaza’s open silk maw. The beast was expelling a strange gas onto him. He tried to hold his breath, making Blackjack laugh at him again.
“Every time you fight back or resist, you only make yourself more irresistible to him,” the latex serpent teased.
Rayquaza then further tightened his claw around the human, still not hurting him, but it forced him to take a breath and inhale the sleep-inducing fumes. He felt even more lightheaded. His entire body was urging him to fall asleep, but he strained to keep his eyes open, not wanting to give the beast the satisfaction of winning. But his eyes began to feel heavier, and heavier, and heavier…
“I promise no harm will befall you. He’ll take good care of you. They all will. This will only feel like a bad dream, and when it’s over, you’ll feel much, much happier,” Blackjack coaxed. “Sleep.”
At that, the human was pushed beyond his limits, and went limp in Rayquaza’s claw. The plushie then opened its massive maw, lifted the human above it, then it dropped him and clamped its mouth shut. It teased him a bit as it tossed the human around its mouth with its rubber tongue. After playing with him for a bit, the dragon tilted its head back, and the human slid down its silken throat to the plush chamber that was its stomach. The human was still awake thanks to being tossed around by the plush, and he weakly stood up and tried to feel for a way out through all the stuffing. The toy dragon noticed this and grinned, rubbing its stomach with its claw as if to tell him that he wouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
“It’s useless to try to escape,” Blackjack began, “As mighty Rayquaza sees it, you’re now his best friend, and he wants to keep you safe and cozy forever. Besides, even if you do somehow manage to break free, Groudon and Kyogre will be right there to catch you. And believe me, all three of them will go to the ends of the Earth to capture you.”
The same gas from before then filled the stomach chamber. The human tried to hold his breath once more, but he was so sleepy and dizzy that he barely lasted a few seconds. He went out like a light.
Blackjack and Mega Rayquaza smirked to themselves; they had both gotten what they wanted: a toy that was theirs to keep and play with forever.
“Bring him back to my lair,” Blackjack commanded. “I have a few games in mind that I think we will all enjoy. Even our precious human, whether he wants to or not.”
The plush dragon then blasted a Hyper Beam at the wall which crumbled to dust, giving them an easy escape path. Mega Rayquaza then blasted off into the sky with Primal Groudon and Kyogre following behind as one cleaved the land and the other summoned a wave of water. Within seconds, they had disappeared from sight into the horizon.
Blackjack laughed to himself as he watched his minions carry away his captive to his lair, with no hope of rescue. The human was finally his and would be for as long as he wanted.
“The house always wins in the end.”
