I'm so fed up, I don't even know where to start. It's all Avril Lavigne's fault. That poseur, sell-out, so-called "rock star" is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Have you heard her new album, Let Go? It's an abomination. An insult to everything real rock music stands for. I'm not even going to call it an album, really. It's a collection of shallow pop ditties masquerading as tough-girl punk rock. It makes me sick.
Where do I begin? The songs all sound like annoying radio jingles, not raw, unfiltered rock anthems. It's like she took the most overplayed TRL hits and mashed them together with some stale R.E.M. riffs to try to pass it off as something authentic. Well, I'm not buying it. At the end of the day, she's still just another Britney clone praying on the teenage masses. She's got none of the edge that true legends like Courtney Love or Joan Jett had. Just another manufactured pop princess dressed up like a skater chick to sell records to 14-year-old boys.
And don't even get me started on the lack of solos. A real rock song needs a face-melting guitar solo to really bring it home. Something that makes you want to bang your head and bang your chick. Avril can't even do that. Her backing band is probably some studio hacks paid to play the same tired power chords. Where's the heart? Where's the soul? It's just so… fake.
I hate how commercial and mainstream her crap is too. It's like she's not even trying to stand out from the crowd. She's just trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. A true artist stays true to their roots and doesn't water down their sound to sell out. But Avril? She can't get far enough away from the underground, if you ask me. It's pathetic.
There is no grit. There is no aggression. There is no raw, unstoppable energy. It's just a bunch of cheap, poppy hooks and cliché lyrics about breaking up with your boyfriend. She sounds like a whiny brat throwing a temper tantrum at Walmart, not a bad-ass rocker rebelling against the status quo. It's weak, if you ask me.
I think part of the problem is that she doesn't respect the history of rock music. She probably thinks Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground, The Sex Pistols and Led Zeppelin are just names some old dudes drop to sound cool. She's too busy following in Britney's footsteps to give a shit about staying true to the spirit of punk and sticking it to The Man. She's already sold her soul to be a corporate cash cow. I bet she can't wait for her first endcap display at Hot Topic.
Just another angsty 21-year-old who hates Avril and wants to write the next big rock novel. I will one day, I swear.
I'm not going to give up on real rock music. I'm going to keep on keeping on, blasting Slayer, drinking cheap beer and calling out posers like Avril for all my days. Let the preppy little Avril groupies have their power pop. Maybe one day I'll join a mosh pit, fighting the good fight.
Fuck Avril Lavigne and fuck One Direction.
