I didn’t have to go alone; Drake became my shadow, keeping an eye on me from a distance, while Lin had to stay on the ship to watch over the package. At the venue, they were already waiting for me, and we were soon shown to a VIP room. Brax didn’t miss the chance to get handsy while still in plain sight. I had to play along, as those two faces from the landing ring—the ones who’d chased me near the mines—were in the establishment again. As it turned out, they were Bongo’s thugs, one of the local mafia bosses.
Our business talk was constantly interrupted by Brax’s attempts to get closer, as if it were some kind of game he thoroughly enjoyed: inviting me to dance, cozying up on the couch, or standing almost too close. Eventually, he even managed to convince me to take off my helmet so he could see what was underneath. Well, I was surprised—my scars didn’t scare him off, though deep down, I’d secretly hoped they would.
We decided to keep the package and, if possible, find someone to deliver the little one scorluks back to their home planet, somewhere in the Black Eye galaxy. For now, they could stay on my ship. We also needed to figure out what to do with Brax’s client. Meanwhile, Brax himself showed an intense interest in me and, for that reason—or perhaps something else—wanted to join my crew and board my ship. He quickly figured out that I was the captain and that my ship was definitely not the Colibris.
It was surprising how easily the conversation flowed with him. The bot skillfully chose words and phrases, practically forcing me to talk more. In some ways, it didn’t work, but in others, it was remarkably successful…
