This is from an American Girl cookbook.
Butter to grease
.25 cup butter
1 egg
.5 cup buttermilk
.5 cup molasses
1.5 cup flour
.25 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
.25 teaspoon baking soda
.25 teaspoon salt
.25 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease the baking dish with butter.
2. Melt the quarter-cup of butter in a saucepan and then let cool.
3. Crack and beat the egg. Add buttermilk, molasses, and butter into the same mixing bowl and mix.
4. Flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cloves, ginger, and cinnamon go into another bowl and mix.
5. Mix the two ingredient mixtures and stir to make a smooth batter and pour into the center of the baking dish.
6. Bake the gingerbread for about 25-30 minutes, then poke a toothpick into it. If the toothpick comes out clean, it is ready.
7. Let the gingerbread cool for a few minutes and then serve it. You can put powdered sugar or whipped cream on it.
