Tried my hand at making a plane in Kerbal Space Program using the Ferram Aerospace Redux mod (makes aerodynamics actually realistic), procedural wings, and a jet engine mod.
This plane has a Lift to Drag ratio of 15.6 at cruise, and can circle Kerbin 13 times after over 50 hours! I was obseving the range estimation readout, and landed after one circumnavigation. there is NO WAY I am flying it for 50 hours (technically 5 hours at 10x timewarp but still)
Kerbin is the Earth analogue in KSP, and is 600km in radius. The readout showed a range of approximately 47,000km. This plane cruises at 224m/s (0.8x the speed of sound at this altitude).
A longer range of 53,000km could be achieved by flying at the peak L/D speed of 0.75x the speed of sound, but that meant flying at barely 200m/s.
This 47,000km range is still enough to do a full circumnavigation of the real Earth.
