Ugh, this one bit me a little — quite unexpectedly. I don’t even know why.
Maybe it’s just that kind of period XD
But! Despite the exhaustion, I really like how it turned out.
The Sandman
Chapter 10
"Once, I managed to get an answer to my question — but what a strange answer it was. I dreamed that I was walking across a desert landscape. Beneath my feet was sand; all around me the dunes shimmered under the sun. The sand was beautiful, golden, glistening with daylight. The sky was cloudless, and there was nothing and no one — only me and the sand.
Inside, I felt a kind of bitterness, as if my whole being was caught in a vice, longing to break free. It hurt that I couldn’t understand my place in this world — where I should go, or from whom I could seek answers. I walked through the sand with that bitterness, surrounded by gold, yet carrying a dark spot within.
It was easy to move; my feet didn’t sink — I almost floated. But each time my thoughts returned to that bitterness, I began to feel the ground again, burning against my bare soles. Suddenly, coming back from one of those drifting thoughts, I saw a strange figure standing just a few steps away.
And then I heard a voice. It sounded like the voice of an FM radio announcer — clear, emotionless, cold. When I tried to recognize it or compare it to any I had heard before, it changed. Yet I understood how it changed — it became something else. As if thousands of familiar voices had merged into one, making it impossible to tell whether it was male or female.
The being formed lips where its head should have been; its mouth began to open, curling into a narrow tube. With each phrase, the tube extended toward me, like the bell of some strange wind instrument."
