Homemade French Toast
Oven Temp: 350°F
Cooking time: 10 to 12 minutes
I made the bread myself with a simple recipe.
White Bread
2 packets of yeast (I used rapid rising)
1 tbsp of sugar
6 to 7 cups of flour and more for kneading later.
1 1/2 cups of warm water (105°F no hotter)
1 tsp of salt
Open your packets of yeast, dump them into your water (allowing it to proof to see if your yeast is good). Don't forget to add your sugar. If the water is too hot, you'll need to repeat this step. Let it sit for 1 or 2 minutes.
Dump your flour and salt into your mixer (this is optional; you can mix before adding your yeast mixture). Once you add your mixture, don't begin mixing until your dough begins coming together.
Goodie, everything seems to be looking good. Now, it's time to spread more flour on your countertop (or table), dump out your dough, and knead it for a few minutes. Now, you can cut your dough in half (I did that) and get two loaves or leave it as one.
Quickly, grab your favorite bread pans, spray some cooking spray (or any type of cooking oil), and gently set your dough into the pans, covering them with a damp paper towel. Let your dough rise in a warm place for about an hour or longer.
This part is completely optional, but while your dough is rising, melt some butter. I took 3 tbsp of butter, melt it, and just before throwing your bread into the oven, gently cover the tops of your dough with butter.
You can make anything you want with this bread. From making a sandwich, toast, bread pudding, or better French toast. I'll share my French toast recipe with everyone.
French Toast
3 slices of bread
Cinnamon and sugar
3 eggs, a splash of milk, and vanilla extract.
Mix in a small bowl with a fork and dunk your bread slices in the mixture.
Just cook until done and serve with your favorite syrup and sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar on top.
* From Chris: Please note that French toast is a 'blank slate' recipe - meaning, you can do a whole lot with it other than just as is!
Bananas foster style, praline crunch, topped with fruit coulis, cereal-coated (yes, you heard me correctly), stuffed, etc. !
