The moon hung high in the night sky, like a beacon piercing the void, girded by the countless pinpoints of starlight. The full moon held a sort of power, the power to influence the world, and the power to bring forth magic from the ether. It was one of those universally held beliefs that made it hard to doubt there was not something to it; even if you had always resisted believing it. Surrounded by the ramshackle graves of the recently and long since deceased, it was easy to believe now. Tombstones sprouted from the earth seemingly at random, denoting the final resting place of the dearly departed. Many of the slabs of stone stood askew, cracked, broken, neglected, their engravings long since rendered indecipherable by the passage of time. An unnatural fog clung to the graveyard, swirling and churning about the tombs like some sort of foul sorcery. The smell of freshly disturbed earth was thick in the air; either from a new body being interred, or from one being exhumed.
The hair on the back of your neck stood on end as a growing sense of dread built in your core, your heart was pounding in your chest, fueling the growing anxiety. Specters, spirits and all manner of ghouls lurked behind the tombstones, watching your every move, just to be dispelled as you turned your gaze towards them; this place was starting to get to you. A pair of yellow eyes peered out from behind a mausoleum, glowing faintly, the telltale animal eye shine of a predator. The shrill cry of a crow perched atop a ruined grave behind you drew your attention for a split second, turning instinctively towards the noise. You quickly turned your gaze back to the mausoleum just to find the eyes were no longer there; another illusion conjured by your frantic mind. You tried to calm your breathing, but your body was still screaming of potential danger, screaming for you to flee. Suddenly, you were aware of a presence behind you. You tried to run, but your muscles refused to respond as panic quickly descended upon you. You felt warm breath on the nap of your neck, and sheer terror gripped you as you realized it was not a fabrication of your mind. You should have run when you had the chance…
